My buddie has a MIG high mount on his 03' 954 and it looks I spent way too much on a full system to go changing to a high mount now Glad to see so much info coming in daily about the 954...I'll be out all week now that the rain has finally stopped here in NH. Going to try my first 2nd gear stand-up on the 954. My sit downs are getting to the point where I can't see where the hell I'm going. Good and bad I guess...at least with the standups I won't be wheelie-ing into a parked car. That would suck to have to share on the message board I'll let you all know how things go (standing vs. sitting that is) Keep up the posts

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

guys get a devil highmount. in my avatar you can kinda see mine, i got a 3/4 carbon fiber highmount for $100 off starboykevin. he wrecked with it on so i scooped it up. anyway it sounds awesome and the bike seems to have more mid range now. my 2nd gear stand ups were improving but it seems like in the past few days im psyching myself out. seems like im getting nervous now, and i shouldnt be. ive felt comfortable the past few weeks until a few days ago. ah well, ill get there

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Well I'm seeing real progression in my 2nd gear sitdowns. I'm getting hieght about 60% of the time now. And I just about have the starting point dialed in by sound and feel. I still look at the tach to make sure and becuase I really want to know where the upper and lower range is but I'm really starting to feel like I can get them on demand.

My notes so far (mind you I do all this in about 2 seconds):
1 - Look for cops.
2 - Check body posistion (very important) slide **** till I bump real cowl and squeeze knees
3 - Cover rear brake (I lowered it a few week ago and MAN what a difference in comfort)
4 - Scan for cops again (I got pulled over doing a wheelie last week. )
5 - Get rpms in the 5-7K range and speed in the 45-55 range
6 - Slip clutch, hit gas and stay on it.
7 - as it comes back make sure to lean slightly back (this was scary as hell at 1st but now I'm getting used to the feeling)
8 - ride it as long as I can

My biggest problems now are finding areas to ride them out. Monday I actually hit my BP felt the rmps level off and cruised almost 1/2 mile till I knew I was running out of road (was on a back road). I had a buddy riding next to me to tell me my hieght and to watch for cars. I was looking down my forks well to see the yellow line on the road as a guide . I was totaly pumped after that but it was late and everyone was heading home. Then I was getting my services done to my bike yesterday so I haven't been able to ride and try that again. But today I'm out there.

Keep at it guys two ago I was ready to give up now I'm about ready to hit the really long ones. Then maybe I'll try standups.

Props MD954,,,sounds like your starting to advance fast now. Awesome!!
I have had zero progress lately, oh fuggin well, I've been at this crap for too long to give up.
Gixxboy,
That blows butt, Hope you and your ride are ok. I hate the sound of a crashing bike.

I'm gonna try that 2nd gear thingy that MD is doing.
MD, qick question- when you slip that clutch in 2nd are you pinning the throttle at the stop??

Later fellas,,and good luck to all.

HELL NO...NEVER TO THE STOP!! Sorry...didn't mean to yell, but I cringed when I read the tail end of your post Kungfu. I only open my throttle about half way till the revs hit 9k or so, then drop the clutch. If you open her to the stop....loopy loopy. I'll let MD address the question to see if he agrees...I hate to hear the sound of a Honda 954 sliding across the asphault. Ride safe and take it slow...you'll get it. Later -Bladerunner

Oh yeah...congrats MD954...sounds like the hard work is paying off. Keep checking for the Wheelie tickets are expen$ive!!

So I just started sitting a little bit farther back each time I was trying sit-down wheelies, and now I cover the rear brake about 75% of the time on the sit-downs.

As for stand-ups, I just started trying to covering the rear brake about a month ago, and it's helping to extend my stand-up because I have that fail-safe.

when doing sitdown wheelies you wanna sit closer to the tank, this may sound funny but you can balance alot better, when you sti back there is more weight over the tire and the bike tends to get the woobles

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Right on Bladerunner,
Figured I'd ask. I am getting frustrated. Seems like everytime I start to figure something out it doesn't work the next time. I must be a slow learner of the wheelie arts. I was doin nice endos by 500 miles and started working on wheelies at about 1500 miles,,, I have 16000 miles now and only a few successes. I used to do this really well on the buell, I spose I got the "***** in the stomach syndrome when I crashed the year before last.
I have tried 2nd gear wheelies before and I absolutly can't fathom how that gets clutched up. I've bounced it before but it wasn't that high.
just thought I'd ask though. I'll keep at it. Guess I need to catch a good case of the "Fug Its" again, that always helps,,,or hurts.
Thanks for the reply.

Couldn't agree more, not to the stop. It's funny but I find that the better my clutch technique/timing, the less throttle I need to give it.

I also found that sometimes it only comes up 6 in. to a foot at first then, when I think that's all I'm going to get out of it, it starts to rise as the rmps hit 10-11K. I used to let off when I didn't think it was going up, but now I wait till the from wheele hits the road.

I tried to do a stand up the other day in 2nd with very limited success. The one time it did raise well, I got scurred and dumped it. So back to perfecting sitdowns for me. For a while anyway.

Sorry to here you looped it bro. I almost did the other day because I was following behind a SLOW moving truck on a back road and he turned off just I came to a nice secluded straight away. I thought I was in 2nd so I hit the clutch/throttle like I was and low and behold I was in 1st!!!! Needless to say that bad boy FLEW up. My foot was over the brake and because of the extreme angle I was at it was forced to engage it. I also dumped the throttle and the bike slammed back to the ground. And my chest hit the gas tank. My buddy (who was riding behind me) said I was so close to 12 he thought my tail had hit the road and that's what bounced me back. Needless to say I took a bit of a wheelie break that day. But next day was at it again.

Oh btw, the cop that pulled me over was supper cool. He just yeld at me that I was going to kill myself and told me stop it. Then he walked back to his car and drove off. Doubt that I will ever get that lucky again, but I won't run from cops.

I did the EXACT same thing just 2 days ago. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I was out practicing at my spot behind an industrial park with a friend. Turned around, shifted (or so I thought) and WHACK...up she came. So hard the tank knocked the wind out of me. My friend was like...nice 12 o'clock a$$hole, now park that thing and go change your boxers. Talk about ending the day on a bad note. I drove home the whole way thinking "That couldn't gotten ugly if I didn't cover my rear brake!" So once again it pays to read stuntlife and use the tips from the guys that know. Saving a wheelie gone bad hurts the nutz...but the bike is still in one piece. Later.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Dude,,,,
you got really lucky! nice scrape on the end can. Glad your alright and glad the bike is fine too.

Anyway, I had a little bit of luck last night. I was trying some stand ups. Got a couple of em about a foot off the ground. I guess one of em looked pretty good cause I got some nice props from some skater girlz. But who knows, I am almost 30 and they could have just been screwing with me. Fug it. I'll take any props. On a crappy note, I had to buy a new rear tire this morning. Went out to the garage and there was a massive screw right in the center of the tire. I needed a new one anyway but I still had a good 2 weeks left on that one, well at least I got to finish it off at the tire place.

Hey all my 954 comrads, have a kick **** weekend. I know I will. Be safe :YEAH

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

yeah i want a new tire also. im about to just burn this one off. the arc on it is huge, when you do stand ups it wants to go to the left and right, all over. i wanna get one thats nice and flat.

im gonna start clutching 2nd. i can bounce then up fine but if i clutch it i can start the wheelie at lower MPH. the only thing is that bouncing and letting off the clutch its sooooo awkward. im gonna try and get some other pics of wheelies, burnouts, endos etc. soon on my bike

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Hey MD954 if you're still serious about purchasing a video camera to tape some of your stunting make sure it has an AV in....and not just an AV out.
I wasted $450 bucks on a camera I have to hold on to to film. I'd rather put it inside my tank bag or in a backpack and plug in a helmet cam. My camera however is NOT compatible with any helmet cams since I can't plug them in. Yet another impulse purchase gone bad Later...bladerunner

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Well, guys I spent the weekend scrubbing in a new rear tire. I must say that so far I am really impressed. I know it's a little off subject but it's good info.
I wanted another bridgestone (they are cheaper and I have no real complaints) but they were all out so I bought a Metzler sportec m-1 and man what a great tire. I seriously doubt that it needed the scrub in I gave it. It was a little slippery brand new but nothing like a pilot or a bridgestone. It warms up ultra fast, I was impressed. I'll let you guys know how well it wears,,,prolly the same as anything else but we'll see. Without a doubt I am changeing my front tire to match sometime soon. Good tire.

I messed around a little bit yesterday with some standups. not to much luck but I got it up a couple times (out of 20 tries). Nothing new from there.
