how to air box mod f4i
Re: how to air box mod f4i
I'm about to do this mod tomorrow. Did anybody notice any pressure venting from the motor (oil fill) or is it just vacuum making the noise? More importantly, do I really need to adjust my idle cable to accompany this mod? Yes, I read every post in this thread but I never got the link between pumping fresh air into the motor and that messing with your idle and motor smoothness.

Re: how to air box mod f4i
if the mod is done correctly it can't build pressure only a vacuum and doing this mod stops hot oily air from being pumped into your motor so the mixture will need to be adjusted by using the stock idle cable which actually adjust the idle fuel air mixture
Re: how to air box mod f4i
damn! the f4i looks soooo much easier to work on :P
For those of you with an 03-04 model 600 RR (may work for 05-06, not sure havent cracked one open but im sure its about the same) here are a few quick pictures i just took after doing this. hope this clears some stuff up...
This is about what it looks like once you pull the airbox off, maybe less dirty haha. As you can see there are 3 hoses coming from the cover, these all stay connected. One hose is connected to the valve and airbox only, pull this and discard for now. The other hose that was connected to the airbox will still be used as its one that is connected to the cover.

I didnt get pictures of this, but in the valve are two little screws. pull those screws out, be careful of the rubber washer/gaskets within, but seperate the 3 pieces of the valve. remove the plunger and the spring and reassemble.
Now, you have a T valve. My hoses were a little worn, so I cut a bit off the ends. be careful if you do this, if you cut too much it may kink a hose trying to get them all back together. I just used sharp scissors:

Now you take the three hoses (connected to the case) and run them to a nipple on the now empty valve. Make sure all the connections are good and the valve sits up under the hole. where the old hose used to come out in the frame for the airbox.

Now you have that part done, time for the airbox. On the underside there will now be two nipples that are open vents which lead straight to the throttle bodies... not good unless you like to burn dirt and debris as part of your fuel mixture. In order to plug them I went with the valve cap/electrical tape combo. I also put a little epoxy to make sure they hold tight. There are a lot of different ways (and im sure better ones) to plug the holes, but I figured this would work.
Anyway... sorry for the poor write up I just thought I'd let the RR guys know its a bit different than the f4i but not much, same basic concept just different locations.
by the way, im probably halfway to getting this thing to where i want it before i give stunting a try....
cmon parts get here!

Re: how to air box mod f4i
i just did this lil "mod" ( i hate that mod word) to my bike... didnt notice that sound everyone was talkin about but that is probably due to the fact i had no muffler on and it was loud as all hell.
Re: how to air box mod f4i
I have thought lot of this mod for my f4i. How the engines breathing works after this mod? If I'm right there is no more hoses for breathing, so the breathing don't work as it should. Tell me about this guys..
Re: how to air box mod f4i
Just wanted to say uber props to the experienced guys for takin time out and explainin this 1 million times over again. I just finished readin all 13 pages of this, and feel that i can go perform this mod effectivly and correctly, even though i have had little wrench time on my bike. Expect to see me commenting more and more on this help and how to section...

Re: how to air box mod f4i

did you disable the pair valve ?
Re: how to air box mod f4i
I did this mod on my 02 f4i and it ran fine
, crashed
and the bike laid on it's side running, after I picked it up it died, tried to start but had oil in the cylinder so it stalled the starter
, pushed it to turn the motor over and clear the cylinder, then it started and I got to run it for a good 30 min to burn the oil out of the cylinders.
I could see getting oil in the carbs if I had not done the mod, but seeing that I have done the mod, HOW did I get oil in the cylinders?
Is my injeen all buss-up inside cuz? leekn dee oil inside?

the reason why it is smoking is your bike was laying more over than on its side. the oil in the crankcase leaked past your rings into the cylinders its inevitable. it'll clear out mine did the same thing last night.it will smoke till it burns all the oil out of the cylinders. i know this cause i've roller wheelin trucks and anytime the motor sits almost upside down the oil seeps past the rings and it smokes like a bitch on start up. let me kno everyone elses thoughts
Re: how to air box mod f4i
So how do you do this Klean mod . What is a t valve? Will this mod cause the motor to blow up? ..................................................
I'm doin this to my bike right now & yes this thread has all the info you will need . You lazy non reading readers .
