Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Sweet write-up KungFu954, much appreciation.

I will admit that the majority of my wheelies are in first. I just want to hit
that BP. And for now, they are all power-ups. But this weekend I will be
practicing the clutch-ups.

And I will also be trying out the stoppies. I have gotten the rear tire up a
fair height. I do have one question about suspension set-up. Do you
recommend a fairly stiff front set-up, or a loose set-up?

As for how to do wheelies, most of the posts I have seen in this thread are
right on track. It wasn't overnight for me. I am an analyst by trade, so I am
extremely analytical. I would drag my poor wife out with me every weekend
to tape me.

I just kept working the throttle, and trying to cover the rear brake, but, as
you know, it is fairly difficult to cover the rear brake on the 954. Each
weekend I would get the front tire a little higher, but nothing too serious.
And finally, one day, I was at my favorite practice spot, and I just decided
that I was either going to pop it up, or wreck it. And now I am on to stand-
ups.

Just go at your own pace, as if you didn't know that already.

Again, thanks for the thorough write-up.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

I love endos too!!!

After beating my bike up with wheelie after wheelie, I move on to practicing endos. One thing I HIGHLY recommend is to take time to make sure your tire is warmed up. My front end washed up at about 50mph because of cold tires. After a few tumbles, I got to see my bike slide for about 100 feet on its new cage. Wish I got it on tape. The sparks were sweet!!!

I haven't been practicing much since my front right rotor seems bent, and my pads need changing. Here's a clip of a little endo in a small parking lot. I usually like starting them at 40+mph. This one is mabye at 30mph or so (since the lot was small).

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Thanks for the props on my write up!!!

dax,
In response to your suspension question. I never have changed my front suspension from stock. I have heard of a lot of people setting stiffer in front. Adam Chumita goes stiff on his Gixxer 750 for example but I like the stock front setting only because I ride a LOT so it serves me well for the milage I do. I have never had a problem from the suspension. The only times I have ever locked the front were because of cold tires, crappy tires, or bad road surface. There are so many veriations of set up though it's kinda personal pref. I know this guy who has his front tire pressure set at 15psi,,,yikes! He swears by it, but I would hate to corner with that psi.

Anyway good luck, and thanks for the wheelie tips, I still think the stand up is dope!

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

I have a 2002 954. I have no problem doing sitdown power wheelies in 1st, and i can power it up in a stand up in 2nd with little or no bounce at all. Just keep the rpms at about 6500 or 7 and doin about 45mph standup and roll on the throttle quickly and it will come up. In 3rd have ur rpms at about 7k and and bounce on it and roll on the throttle hard. It may be a little hard to get up in 3rd, but with practice u can get it every time. Then just learn to balance and change gears and u can ride them forever. If u have trouble pullin it up in 2nd, just stand on the back pegs and roll on the throttle from about 6k. It will come up easy.

Only MINOR scratches. I've scratched it up worse just dropping it at a standstill without the cage. The best thing is that I was able to pick it up and ride off without any mechanical setbacks. Before the cage, the stator would break easily.

BTW: it's a 905 cage. Good cage, and great customer service.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

Got to the balance point today :YEAH I was going over to meet my little bro at my dad's house to go do some riding and big bro and pops were hanging out and we started talking about wheelies and stuff. (pops watched a couple stunting videos with us when we first got the bikes and has seen me do some of my early sit down's) So I'm telling him I can ride standups pretty good now. Big bro is kinda unconvinced, thinking I guess that I probably think they're a lot better than they really are since he's kinda always been the two wheel fanatic of the fam. So I tell them to run out to this spot we all know and I'll show them a decent one. Big bro has never even seen a standup live!

So we get to the spot and they run up the road and park at the pre-arranged wide spot and watch for cops coming from the other way. It's a little uphill for about a quarter mile then down a little and flat on the other side so I don't want to come over the hill in a wheelie and see a crimefighter

So they get set and I take off after checking behind me for cops or any cars and I get in 2nd right away and bounce it up at about 40 with the left foot back and the right covering the brake. It comes up perfectly and I get it up good and high as I'm starting up the little grade and all of a sudden I realize I'm not speeding up any more I had hoped to be able to ride it up near them before I ran out of rpm's but it's just floating! NIRVANA

I can just keep going forever! I ride it to them and give them a look over as I go by and just keep on going over the little hill and down onto the flat on the other side. My internal clock has shut off by this point and I'm just thinking "this is crazy!"

Well I got to the end of the straight and let it down nice and smooth after about 1/2 mile and come riding back and they have jaws hanging! Even little bro who rides with me all the time is trippin'. I'm even trippin'!

Needless to say big bro and pops were absolutely stunned at what I have been able to learn in 3 months of riding. I was too at that one. I didn't get another that good today but it was too hot to keep all the gear on so I was being very conservative but I think it'll be a regular thing within a couple more weeks.

Oh btw: I think I've been closer to the bp than I thought recently because I've gotten that floating feeling a lot but thought it must not be the same thing as I hear talked about since I didn't think I was anywhere near BP but today felt about normal with the tire just a bit higher than I usually ride them so I'm super stoked. I would give $100 to have had them video taping that stuff. Best one ever for me

If it's a lowside crash, most likely the cage will take most of the impact, but get swingarms sliders to keep the swingarm from getting jacked up. I've only got little rashes on the bar ends, but no broken clip ons with the cage on. I've also been lucky with no tank damage will all my spills. If you loop it, flip the bike, or highside, it's too hard to tell what parts will get messed up.

Get busy dog! You gotta get out and get that double Rizzle up :YEAH

Thanks for the props man. I've never been really talented at anything athletic in my life and this is trippin' me out. I'm not un-athletic and I'm in ok shape and all but it seems I always know someone who really picks something up super quick and it just amazes me. Anyway I just seem to have a knack for wheelies. Even the one buddy I have that has been wheelieing (<--is that a word??) stuff for years trips on how fast I've learned. I am stoked beyond belief at this stuff. I gotta fight the urge to rip off standups everywhere I go

I'm gonna get some video soon and I'll find a host and let you check out the action. Now if I could just get the ***** to get the back tire off the ground It scares the hell outta me not having the saving grace of compression and rear brake. I gotta give you props for those stoppies. Seems more scary to me than wheelies.

Anyway keep at it mang! Just ride every day you can and wheelie every chance you get. That's what I've been doing. I take back roads everywhere and almost no straight stretch goes un-wheelied unless I've got cars in sight. It helps to live in BFE like I do though

Yeah man! I haven't used the clutch before the other day and the thought was scary as hell for me. I had learned powering them up and I still do standups but sitdown's I clutch up. It took a little practice but it's way easier and less scary than I thought. Yesterday after my good wheelie little bro got a great 2nd gear clutch up sitdown on his F4I. He doesn't do standups yet and it was by far the longest wheelie he's ever ridden. I was watching it in my mirror. As soon as it came down I was giving him the big thumbs up over my head and had to pull right over because I knew he would want to talk about that one! It was a great day of riding for both of us.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

i personally wasnt that impressed by the "wheelies from dummies" video..a little good beginner info but doesnt talk enough about actually doing the damn wheelies...as in different bikes, sprocket sizes, RPM's and **** like that..bro i ride an R1 and actually never use the clutch, never could get it down..i power them up in 3rd at 90mph..gotta clutch a little with small bounce though..i personally feel perfectly comfortable with power wheelies, always comes up to the same exact spot as the rest..i guess after you get it down and can get it up to the BP powering it then it just comes every time
lol..in the video they got like 2 down 17 up sprockets..

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips

i think im gonna practice 1st gear clutch ups, i was practing those small burnout chirps (when the back wheel spins real quick and chirps) and didnt get em, but teh fornt wanted to come up and wasnt scary so i figured "hmmm its liek a 1st gear clutch up", so imma try that... see hw first gear clutch ups go, 2nd gear seems to go too fast for me

[QUOTE=el nino]i think im gonna practice 1st gear clutch ups,

Just be carefull my fellow 954 rider...it's real touchy in first gear and it comes up VERY fast. Be smooth on the throttle and take it slow, wear your gear, and cover that rear brake. Ever looped a liter bike on top of you at 55 mph...I have. It sucks big time. I stick with 2nd gear wheelies...more throttle to play with and not so damn touchy. Roll on at like 30-35 and slip the clutch in for a sec til she climbs to 8k and let it out smooth but quick. Stay on the throttle and back off as it comes up higher. Again....start slow. PM me if you have specific ???'s Later, bladerunner.
