CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
hey guys. my roomate just purchased a 900rr to stunt. since he just started attempting wheelies, im rockin the 900rr as well. i kicked the tank in and have been practicing spreaders and some special k's. gettting better at them, just gotta get smoother and higher. on the 954 i can get tank wheelies up but i dont like how the tank is shaped and my bike is too pretty to dent it in right now. my 2nd gear standies are good. anywhere from 1/2-1mile usually. can pretty much balance them and ride them for a good ways but im getting major arm pump after 4 or 5 long ones
Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Allright FHL,
Listen up ok, altitude really effects horsepower but has a much less effect on torque. I'm having problems with wheelies too, but I know it is not the bike. I have lifted it in first and second I know it comes up it is not the bike,,,trust me. You really have to stop focusing on why it's not working and start focusing on what will make it work. This skill can take a long time to learn, I'm on my 3rd year. For me it's taking longer than most, but I did spend a hell of a lot of time on other skills too.
Look,
Worst possible case scenerio on altitude WORST case, ok is that your running 100 hp and I dunno 60 ft lbs that would be seriously pushing reality limits. Thats still what most 600s run at sea level and the 954 weighs the same as an F4i and I've seen those do everything a liter biker can, soooooo whatcha think chief.
It ain't the bike, overcome your denile and move on.

When you are doing your Special K's, are you putting your left foot forward or your right, or is the Special K foot specific? Just wondering.
Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
i got to BP very very close, i got it up and the bike kind of coasted, felt SO SO good. gotat find a spot, im just doing them on backroads. i think my problem is when i get it up, it comes down.... gonna try and turn up teh idle and see what happens :YEAH my goal is to ride the idle for a LONg time and get at least one handed first gear slow stand ups before the season is over (novermber)
Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Good to see Blade back in the post
Snigg is getting just about as rare but not too bad yet
I only got one day of riding in this weekend and that was only for a couple hours but I made some great progress with something I'm really keen to learn. Brake control. It's crazy what I can do with the back brake now after seriously focusing on covering/using it for a couple sessions. I can now get my foot on it (actually pressed down a touch) just after the front leaves the ground and use it to adjust the height of the wheelies and I feel all comfy and safe even when I get behind BP for a sec and start slowing down. I can give the brake a little jam and the front is instantly on the way back earthward.
I've sacraficed a little bit from my wheelies while I've been working on the back brake (because I'm always fiddling with it while wheelieing to get used to the effect it has) but for the safety factor and the future use in slow stuff I think it's worth it.
No record wheelies this weekend but some that were closer to 12 than I've ever gotten before and no fear at all with the right foot pressing slightly on the brake and bringing it back to BP.
Also I got a new ICON coat that matches my Tymax pants so I can connect the two just in case the bad thing happens. I think it's the same jacket you're rocking Dax.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
what i find really odd is that when i bring em up, after they go down i find i never had my right foot on teh brake. im not gonna loop it but i think teh few times i've gotten to BP (like twice heheh) i then thought if i had my idle raised i could ride it with the brake. i dunno why im not thinking about teh brake right away. i think i should right?
maybe its cause i havent been high enuff that sub conciously i know i didnt need it. oh well, got anotehr day off of work today and its raining... great!

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Alright bitches it's on now! :YEAH Went out today and rode BP wheelies. I didn't "hit BP", I wasn't "in and out of BP". I was rocking the freeway to no end! It was kinda windy so I had to spend a lot of attention steering (which I now have to the point that today I changed lanes :YEAH :YEAH so some of them I would let down a little while I was leaning off the side which cost me some distance but they still rocked (to me) and those ones sucked.
I had one today that was so glorious that I was riding along at BP and saw an exit sign for the exit that leads to where I used to live and it was like "blah, blah, 1 mile" You know what's coming next right????
You know it. I rode it out right past that exit and just kept on going until I had to set it down for traffic. I can say that I now know for sure I'm at BP. There's no way you can ride 1-1/4+ mile wheelies in 2nd gear if you're not at BP.
I was getting some slow down where I'd concentrate on bringing it back further and riding the brake a little to slow down when I'd start gaining on the traffic in front of me. I couldn't really slow down a lot but I could tell I would start closing with them more slowly as I was slowing a couple MPH.
I got passed for the first time too! That is awesome! I'm just rocking along about 65-70ish in the slow lane and have cars passing me on the left giving me the thumbs up and ****. Cars going in the opposite direction with driver and passengers giving me the :YEAH sign out the sunroof or both side windows or both.
Flat out awesome day!
If I can find road fairly flat and not a lot of wind to where I can just hang back off the bike and not have to shift to the side (which also brings you forward due to the lack of extendable arms) I can pretty much ride it on and on.
I just got in like 2 seconds ago and am still pumped in case you couldn't tell

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Oh two other things. ( I didn't want to add to that last massively long post)
#1 How long does it take for the back brake to fade at about 60 with moderate pressure? I was goofing around after I got off the freeway and trying to hold the throttle on enough to bring it past BP and just modulate the back brake to adjust the height but after a couple times of shifting forward and back through BP the last time it didn't want to come back down very much and I had to let off the gas to get it back down.
#2Regarding the post I made above to you ElNino: After a few days of reminding myself to use the brake it's already becoming second nature to use it. This is something I'm more excited about than anything because I don't wanna get all fooked up doing this stuff if I can help it.
I was stopping the ascent of some of the wheelies with the back brake as they would reach the desired height. It's a great feeling to know you are on it that fast. I'm thrilled to be actually learning to use the thing instead of just the token "covering it," that I was doing before.
Now if my dam little bro would get back from vacation with the crappy vid cam I'd get some more footage and get it up. Although this one may take a bit longer to download

holla at'ya boy bitches!
anyway, been practicing spreaders and special k's on my roomates 900rr stuntbike. had a little accident and rashed it up, but its all good. the stand ups are slacking, seems like if i dont go do a few everyday then it takes me longer to get warmed up. since ive been working on spreaders and **** i havent done many stand ups lately, but give me a few runs and ill rock a miler for ya.
anyway just checking in and keepin this thread alive

Hey RRMIKE...congrats on the BP wheelies
Its been raining here in NH for the last 5 days now
I'm glad to hear your up high enough to slow em down....I'm still only doing sit downs, but they are a hell of alot higher than they were in the beginning of the summer. I thought I was pretty high back then
Seems like I had a couple FEET to go...and I'm still not there yet. Are you doing all of your highway wheelies sitting or standing?? Everyone I ride with does standups...and can't do a sit down for sh*t. So I've been trying to master those first....
don't really know why. Keep it up on one wheel :YEAH --blade

Blade,
I'm just like the guys you ride with. I can't do a sitdown for ****
I could maybe ride a 2nd gear sit for a couple hundred yards. I can still see where I'm going off and on when I used to do them but since I rode out my first stander for more than, up....back down, I've been hooked.
Snigg,
How is the transition to tank stuff? I imagine you have to get a lot more wild with the gas/clutch to get them up?? I know sitdown's on the seat take way more clutch for me than standups. And even both feet forward standups take a noticably greater amount of clutch than with the left back. Anyway keep up the tank stuff. It's sick when you get it on lock :YEAH
ElNino,
It's tough to learn the brake when you're starting IMO. You don't really use it so it's about impossible to learn. If you do try to use it you just end your wheelie right then and there and that's kinda counter-productive to what you're trying to accomplish. You can try to ride a little brake just as the wheelie comes up and use it to slow/stop the ascent of the front along with a little roll-off but I know how tough it is to pay attention to so many different things while learning. It just seems to all happen so fast! The great news for you is this: It all slows down as you get better!!! I didn't think I would be able to ride a decent wheelie when I started. It was, throttle open, front tire coming up (about a foot
) , panic/terror-throttle closed, tire down. It all seemed to take about 1/10000000000th of a second. As you get over the fear part with practice it just slows down. That's the only way I can describe it. I can think about how fast the front is coming up and whether I should stay at my present throttle position or start to roll-off early, then decide if I want to stab a little back brake to stop it where it's at and ease it up the rest of the way to BP, then listen to the revs for a tic and decide I need to lean back a little more and bring it up a little further as I'm pressing down on the brake just until I can feel a little tension.........and this is all in the first second/20 feet of a wheelie. It just slows down with practice and experience. It's as simple as that for me. Oops getting
Anyway if you're doing 1st gear wheelies the brake is not necessary. Simple as that. If you close the throttle it will come back down unless you're super slow. I've seen clips of guys dragging tail by mistake and just let off and down it comes. There's just too much compression in first for it to not slam back down. The other reason is that you probably won't think to use the brake in a panic situation anyway. I have "covered it" since I started doing left foot back wheelies and have had 3 or 4 little scares and not once did it even enter my mind to use it until it was all over. I just chopped the throttle and it came down quick. That's another reason I like 2nd for freeway and not 3rd but that's even more
I'm not saying to not play with it and try to learn it but don't stress over it right now. If you can practice it more power to you, I just couldn't remember so many things when I was starting and don't want you stressed out because you keep forgetting and think you're gonna get killed because of it. If you are doing 1st standers you can always save it by shutting off. (Just don't get a bad grip where you pull the gas open if you feel like you're falling back
That can screw you)
Did it on my dirt bike and learned real fast
Sorry for the long rant but it's 4am and I jsut got off work and am tired. Sorry if it doesn't make any sense. I'll clear up any questions tomorrow/today when I get up

ive just been doing tank wheelies in first. just slip the clutch a little and it'll come right up. takes some getting used to, and you gotta lock your arms or it'll throw u back onto the seat. i need to get a new tank so i can dent it in
Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Props RRMike!
Fuggin Awesome. I went out a bit yesterday with the *** it mentality and got it up a little. I pulled off a sweet power wheelie this morning, felt nice and steady all the way to the rev limiter. I've been really argueing with the stand up thingy. I know it's supposed to be wierd at first but it definatly scares the **** out of me. I feel really natural just standing up but the rear peg thing is the wierd part. awww well I'll keep at it.
In other news, I'm moving into my new BITCHEN pad this weekend. Aww ya, 2 story 3 bath my own "man room" <--my wife calls it that. and FINALLY a 2 car garage so I canset my shop up to it's fullest and get the new tool box I've been needing for a year. (That's a nice feeling,,, having so many tools they won't all fit in 2 large craftsman tool chests.) I do believe I'll be purchasing a fiddy this winter and imediatly taking it apart.
back to bike stuff,
So far the new Bridgestone 014 I fit on the front is doing awesome. warms up quickly and gives MAJOR feedback feels like someone serviced my whole front end. Today should be stoppie day I scrubbed them in pretty good so I'll try a few. So far I dig the new Bridgestones I'll give a full report after stunting them.
Sounds like good progress from all yall Props to everyone riding the mono
Peace

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
i'm not sure if anyone has asked this already in this post...just to many to read right now.....
i just did my first stand up bounce wheelie yesterday...(pretty freaken cool) and I got a little wobble as I came up. I put my left leg on the rear peg, and tried to cover the brake with my right foot(this was in 2nd gear too)...when I bounced, it started to wobble a little.
is this normal?...is there a way to correct it? ie: knee position, or body position?
i can do my sit down 2nd gears, no problem. So I finally decided to try the stand ups. Just want to make sure I work the bugs out before trying to ride these out. Dont want to hit the ground if I dont have to.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Don't bounce with your legs when you're running them staggered. You can bounce the hell outta it if you have both feet on the front pegs but not staggered. It'll come up crooked every time because you are pushing on the right peg more than the left.
Learn the clutch and stop bouncing them. It'll only take you a day or two to learn it and you'll never go back.

Re: CBR 954rr Wheelie tips
Thanks El Nino
RRMike,
Dude you got some seriously good advice. I think when i do get this down I'll probably credit you whenever someone asks where I learned that. I got the front up a bit more Yesterday still not very high but much more steady. Still struggling with stand ups but I'm starting to understand a bit more and I have got more comfortable with the staggered thing.
My Rear tire has had it (I always like the very end of a tire because that's really the only time I do any burnouts. I'll probably do some serious circles before I go get it changed. Fun, expensive,,,but fun. plus I'll be finishing moving tonight and tomorrow so I prolly won't be out until monday but hey at least monday won't suck.
