how do you run a fiddy without a battery?

I read somewhere, that the racers cut the weight down on their 50s by junking the battery and starter. I've just had a footpeg in the ankle after looping my fid, If the bike weighed less - maybe I'd be in less pain.

Anyone out there got a wiring mod?

My ride is a Thumpstar 107cc (a pre-modded fiddy from the East) but the components look the same as a crf50.

remove the battery, starter relay, starter, and fab up a plug for the hole left in the cases from the starter......also pull the flywheel and remove the starter chain. there is also a weight on the flywheel that is not needed and is held on by 3 or 4 bolts. remove it and your bike will rev slightly faster :YEAH
http://www.moto-xtreme-online.com/ is a great site for these bikes, post in the Xtreme section

Racers cut weight down on old 500s by junking the starters and every thing, they will take of the kickstarter mechanism and everything if it saves a half ouce. Then they push start em. But why would you do that on your 50?

Re: how do you run a fiddy without a battery?

Thanks for the Moto Extreme link, I'll search that for the wiring mods.

I want to save weight because I appreciate the difference that a light chassis makes, I used to run a Husky NOX SM -it is the worlds greatest motorcycle(my opinion), it weighs only a few pounds more than a fiddy and can out drag my CBR900.
Once you've had a bike like that, it makes you lust after ultimate power:weight ratios for anything else you ride. I may be in for a lot of work with the fiddy!

For those that haven't seen a Thumpstar - theres one on Ebay item# 4516493580

There's a 125 version out soon with alloy frame and USD forks + more HP.

If u buy the powerband for your thumpsta model bike, u will have no need to take the starter and battery out...it will make up for the weight in power..... be careful though those powerbands are wicked............ I run 4 "D" type batteries on my 50 to start it.....

Nah, the Chevy motor's a heavy dude!

Seriously, take a Husky 570SM for a test drive then imagine it with half as much more power on tap. Riding these things is comparable with putting an atom bomb under your BMX and finding that it will still corner better than a ducati! I'm still buying/selling sportsbikes in the hope I'll get anywhere near the thrill of the Husky.

Go do the test ride from a dealer, and then post your reaction!

He is right about the NOX. Can't take a test ride on a Husky in the USA. They are scarce. My SM610S was a slug but still fun.

Re: how do you run a fiddy without a battery?

Good Point! I've ridden ROUND them but I've never tried one since the old 916.

Anyway none of this bike chat is getting me any closer to junking that fiddy battery!
