F4i stearing stem bearings....

Anyone change these out themselves w/ out the special tools? Mine's starting to make a clicking sound when I press forward on the bars real hard. Tightened the OEM bearings and it's still there. Got some AllBalls tapered bearings, but the manual highly suggests this puller/press combo tool. Anybody have any secret tips you're willing to share?

you need a press to pull the race off the triple tree, Ive heard of people doing it without a press ,but I have no idea how they managed that. Take the triple tree to a shop and they will pull the old one and press the new one for pretty cheap.

Right on. I plan to have that done at the machine shop. I'm more worried about the race in the frame. Since the frame is aluminum, I've heard you can **** the frame up getting the lower outer race out w/ out using the tool. Any tips on that?

they pop out real easy, you just use a long punch or a screwdriver from the top it get the bottom one and from the bottom to get the top one. To put the new ones in you need a big socket(something round and the same size as race),use the old race between the new race and socket, and lightly hammer it in.

Sweet. I've done it on steel frames before, just wasn't sure about the aluminum. Just needed a little confidence booster. Thanks, bro!

also, heat the outside of the stem lightly with a propane torch, just makes the job that much easier

Re: F4i stearing stem bearings....

I've done it to 2 f4i's now

When you take the forks out, the 2 bearing races in the frame can easily be hit out with a flat head screw driver, and a hammer, only takes 1-2 wacks usually (and they are still resuable..)

Then to drive them back in, you need a couple pieces of steel pipe, or a couple sockets that match the size of the bearing race, then you can use the sockets as guides, and either hammer them in, or use a piece of all thread with a couple nuts through the center of the races to "press" them on..
I just drive mine in with a hammer, my local honda dealer said they would have done the same for $60

Now for the bearing race on the triple, its a little harder... I was able to get one off a f4i fork with a hammer and flat head screw driver... But the other one we had to use a air chisel to get it off.. I don't know any better way
