You can try riding smaller wheelies down using the brake to teach yourself to rely on it more. I'm a conservative rider.
Clutch harder with more throttle. I figure everytime I "freak out, cut the throttle, and jam on the rear brake in pure terror causing my head and body to slam into the tank", i'm just another step closer to teaching myself to get used to being there.
