Motorcycle accident kills two in west metro
Two people on a motorcycle are dead after an accident early Wednesday in the western Twin Cities.
It happened at Interstates 394 and 494 in Minnetonka shortly after midnight.
The motorcycle struck a curb on westbound 394, lost control and landed in the right lane of westbound Highway 12.
The driver was lying on the shoulder, and the passenger was trying to direct traffic around the crash scene when the motorcycle passenger was struck by a pickup pulling a boat.
The State Patrol says both the driver and the passenger of the motorcycle died at the scene. The driver of the pickup wasn't hurt.
Names of the victims are being withheld until relatives are notified. The State Patrol is investigating.

Re: Two died n 394 this morning.
That sucks.
WTF is going on. Two guys out of our group just went down in the last week. Thank God its not as serious as this, just a couple of broken bones. What the hell is going on though? Rough part of the season I guess.
Prayers go out to the family and friends, whoever they are.

2 dead after I-394 motorcycle crash; passenger hit by pickup towing boat

August 4, 2005 CRASH0804

A woman passenger who survived a motorcycle crash early Wednesday on Interstate 394 died a short time later when she was struck by a pickup truck towing a boat.
The motorcycle driver was killed in the initial crash, which occurred when the driver struck a concrete curb separating the main westbound 394 lanes from a "collector lane." The motorcycle then flipped over the curb onto a main I-394 lane, near the intersection with I-494, in Minnetonka.
The woman was identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office as Elizabeth Ann Portlance, 36, of Minneapolis.
The identity of the driver had not been released late Wednesday afternoon. According to State Patrol Capt. Tom Fraser, the driver was 37 and lived in the Twin Cities area.
The accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. Although initial reports indicated that the woman passenger was trying to direct traffic around the accident scene when she was struck, State Patrol investigators don't know if that's the case. Neither do they know whether alochol or speed was involved in the initial motorcycle crash, Fraser said.
He said the driver of the pickup truck that struck Portlance was not arrested, and that alcohol was not involved in that accident. Fraser said investigators haven't determined yet where Portlance was on the highway, whether she was standing or kneeling after the initial accident, or how long it was between the first and second accident.
"You can assume she was somewhat dazed or stunned if not injured from the first crash," he said.
By sheer chance, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety released a report Wednesday showing motorcycle fatalities on the rise. According to the report, 25 Minnesotans have been killed in motorcycle accidents so far in 2005, as opposed to 22 by this time last year.
