what makes a pro rider?
what makes a pro rider?
I was just wondering what everyone thinks- After some comps, you hear comments about pros cherry picking by riding as an amature. So my question is, how does everyone think it should be divided? What makes someone a pro vs. amature?
Re: what makes a pro rider?
I think pro is someone who competes and does well. Knows an over all amount of tricks and is solid with throttle/brake control. Is a true stunter, workin on his own, puts his heart into the game, and can rock!
newbie - someone who doesn't know balance point, throttle/brake control, etc. someone who is still learning all of this. doesn't have all around tricks at all.
people who have it down are amateurs. But the ones that are just plain nasty and compete and do it more in a spot light type of way, I would consider pro. But i also think you can be a pro without being in a comp and trying to win. I think it is all based on skill.

Re: what makes a pro rider?
Hopefully stunting will go a little more mainstreamed and become more sanctioned, and there will be a better definition of a pro. I know of a few people who are nasty, but just **** around in back parking lots around town for fun, but if there sanctioned events and they competed they would be a force to be reckoned with.
Re: what makes a pro rider?
I figured posting this thread would have some interesting answers. I am wondering along the line of someone that has never competed, but had a decent bag of tricks. What tricks would decide the designation for the rider? For instance....do you think long stoppies or coasters makes you a pro?
Re: what makes a pro rider?
Anyone who gets paid to ride is a pro. It doesnt matter if they're a sick rider, or they cant even wheelie, if they get paid they're pro.

pro means more than just getting paid to do what you do. according to websters dictionary pro is defined as a person who relies on (insert profession here) for soul income.

Re: what makes a pro rider?
I think I worded this question kinda badly. What I was getting at is this- what skill level are you at before you should be considered a pro? For example, I was at a rider's meeting at a show, and they were trying to decide if they should have a pro and am. coaster comp. Thew was next to me, and said something along the lines of "if you can do a coaster, you are a pro". If you're at a comp, should you be in the pro class because you can do circles or other more difficult tricks? It was just something I was thinking about, and I got curious, so I'm interested in what everyone has to say.
Re: what makes a pro rider?
from what i can see... lots of the kiddies out there throwin down might be some of the most talented riders out but when it comes to competition they get all scared.. both the comps ive gone to this year (only two that were this year over here on the west coast) people showed up saw the level of competition and pussed out.. like last may the competition at irwindale speedway CA. which was featured in last months super street bike... anyways there were something like 42 riders who paid to compete and what ended up happening is a free ride stunt show day for myself and the other TWELVE riders who practiced all day in the stunt area.. the other 30 cats that paid walked over saw us all practicing and figured they had no chance to win and started cryin wanting their money back.. so the next comp i did split us up amateur n pro. hard to say which is which though...
the whole pro vs amateur argument is dumb. In my opinion Pro should be who does it for a living and as far as comp are concerned they should simply do a qualifying round to eliminate the not so goods from the better than mosts.. know what i mean?
motorfest: I was labeled pro because of my LVX affiliation and not allowed to compete even though in MY opinion there were a couple of cats there who were considered amateur (Warren Jamez, Sillyneck -Phil sac nuts-, and some dude named thomas that i never got to intro myself to) that were killin it. id say theyd wipe the floor with me.. but i was judgin them. go fig? same with sick *** shahin600, he got labeled pro and was judging with me, and the whole time we were like.. *** i wish i could go tear it up with these guys and see how we compare.. know what i mean?
anyways... ***.. it.. We are all amateurs.. the PROs are the kids that havent even started stunting yet...

pro----you get paid to do shows, you have a video out....
gotta give the up and coming guys a chance to get out there and compete....and throw entry fee money into the mix.....big dogs can't be glory hounds or the sport wont go on.

Re: what makes a pro rider?
i heard someone say at a comp once when they were tryin to organize this situation during the riders meeting........"if yer here to compete .......and u have a team, a name, and merchandise..................u should be competing pro..........step up get in the mix u have done so in every other aspect"
not sayin thats necessarily the best deciding factor but it does really make u think about this whole topic from a different angle!

Re: what makes a pro rider?
how bout this:
if you want to win $$ then enter as a pro, if you don't wanna win money then enter as an amateur.
look at roadracing, if you wanna cherrypick, you are riding for a trophy and a couple bucks....want the 'real' money and you race expert, no matter the fact that there are factory guys out there.
in 2005 i think you'll see some progress in our 'sport'....now if we can just get all these "supporters" to come and compete we will be all set.
right now the designations are your own, i dont know why people would sandbag and compete amateur when they are clearlly heads and shoulders above the other 'amateurs', it is a matter of personal pride i guess.
interesting topic, i could write for an hour!

ahemmmmmmmmm i have vid footage of to northeast "pro" stunters signed up on the amateur list at stuntrageous 1! lmfao
Re: what makes a pro rider?
i think you have to win competition to be considered a pro. if you think you can beat the pros enter and make a name for yourself. i've seen some people that sandbag amature events even though they win them on a regular basis. once you win an amature event it is time to move up.

Kinda what I was thinking. Once you compete and place in the top 3 or first place once or twice, time to step up.
Re: what makes a pro rider?
The one thing I hate to hear is when the amatures ask what the payouts for the amature class is. Pro class is the only class that should have a payout. If the difference between 1st place amature and 1st place pro is a couple hundred bucks, well you do the math.
Or how about teams that sit on stunt life and tell you they did shows in front of 10,000 people and got paid for it but still want to comptete as an amature. If you do a show in front of 10 or 10,000 and collect money for doing so, your a pro. Maybe not in skill level, but your making money from it and that means pro status.

only problem is that Joe blow takes 1st in amateur in event in texas the next event who is keeping track of who took what in what event. There is no traceability (sp) and different promoters for each event. A governing body is what is needed but we all know what has happened to everyone of those that tried to do it.
Re: what makes a pro rider?
Me and stuntspot.com are going to put on a series very shortly that will require sactioning and you will then be registered for that series as pro, or amatuer. Seems like lately you're a pro if everyone knows you....you have your own video....and you've competed before. (or if you do a goddamn headstand on your headlight hehe kane
) That's how motorfest was viewed I guess. I got to do the amatuer comp then but I dunno if that'll happen again because of vids and stuff. I just lucked out on timing

Re: what makes a pro rider?
those were the type of answers I was looking for. I do have to admit, one of the reasons I came up with this thread was to kinda see where I stood as far as skill level goes. I have only been to one comp, and I entered as an amature (which is where I belonged...probably still do
). I feel I have progressed alot, but I'm still not sure where I belong. At this point, I think I would still ride as an amature....I guess I'll find out when I grow the nuts to ride at another comp.
