Thoughts on stunting (the direction its headed)
Thoughts on stunting (the direction its headed)
I got hooked on stuntin about a month before my new bike came in. I thought it was pimp to do stoppies on the ole RM250. Back then we called them "nose wheelies.."..hahaha.. thats funny..
that was back in 1996...can't believe i've been at this for 7 years!
isn't utterly amazing how fast things have grown in the last 2 years?
I remember the first time an amateur (not craig jones, christian pfiefer or the other english stunt pros) pulled a 12.. after that, it became a standard.. you couldn't stunt unless you could smash that rear brake light to smithereans and then set it down so hard you'd crack the front fender.. THAT was stuntin..
Now the 12's have turned into mile long coasters, high chair ****in circle wheelies, parkin 12's, 12 burnouts, you name it, its done on 12.. ya know what i mean?
it used to be amazing to see a high-speed highway wheelie combo..if he went from sittin to standing, he got props!..
anyone else feelin me on this? I remember downloading the first video i saw of amateur circle wheelies. I thought "holy ****, whats left now?".. now i see guys rockin no-throttle-hand stuff..that blew me outta the water when I first saw it here in tulsa at the World Stunt Riding Championship.. I was totally floored..
So I guess what I'm sayin is, at what point does this become old school?
When is coastin a 12 w/no throttle hand while makin a sandwich and faxin in a loan application gonna be considered "old news"?
I remember one handed stoppies, flamingo's on the highway, tank wheelies, skitchin..
is all that considered old school now? I see the videos a lot of you guys are puttin out and it has some "amazing, never before seen" footage, but what happened to the stuff that made this sport exciting? not saying that the new stuff isn't exciting but theres a lot that seems to be gettin left out lately..
I guess I'm "old school" because the stuff I seen lately comin out on vids looks to, um, "espn" for me I guess.. I miss the old school stuff.. the *******, footage from parties, running from cops, stunt wrecks, duct-tapin + zip tyin galore..
THAT was the stuff that made me decide that stuntin and riding was for me.. I know a lotta you guys are goin pro, which is great.. Mad props to you for gettin paid to do what you love to do.. and something that you are well respected for. If I could get paid to wakeboard, I'd sure as **** do it...
I just wanna read you guys out on this.. i wanna see what direction YOU think things are headed.. Whats left? What new tricks are there out there? I thought it was all over after 12's.. guess not.. I know we are still on the ascending side of stunting, we've yet to peak.. So I know theres a lot gonna happen that hasn't happened yet.. Whats its gonna be like when our kids hear the word "stuntin", what will they associate with it?
I'll tell you what I used to associate the term "stuntin" with..
*******, parties, madness, thrashin, illegal, hot, fun, wild, absolute craziness, envy..
Now you know what I think when I hear stuntin?
crash cages, 12 bars, competitions, who's ridin for who?, who's goin pro?
ya know?
I'll leave you guys with this.. I've used this line more than a few times to justify a lot in my life.. Maybe you can too..
I said it once, and it struck a bell in my head..
"Stuntin is more than just my 'hobbie', its my lifestyle"

Wheelies on the highway are still what I do most... As for the sport, i see it heading to how it is in Europe now. It's a regular motorsport like any other (Trials, Moto Cross,Enduro/motard/road Racing, etc...) with it's own seperate legal venues, riders, sponsors, etc...
It's just going to take time for people here to leave the whole "gangstar" look behind so the average person won't look to the sport and see a bunch of punks just trashing bikes (don't get me wrong, I got some of that style going on too). Riders overseas have nice leathers and clean bikes and treat it like a proffesional sport. Once the sport starts to look proffesional then that is how people will see it...
It took a long time for skateboarding to get to where it is now. I used to sk8 every day and never thought it would actually be a sport. We were just thrashing handrails downtown pissing off rent-a-cops and buisness men and having a good time
On the other hand, I'm still out there on the highway giving soccer moms heart attacks, so who knows how long it'll take
