Dumping the clutch

So I went to a spot today to put in a session with a friend. And holy hell lol.

Ok, so my old wheelie style was go slow.. clutch out... slip it and up. But no real stunters do it this way, so I stepped up to the plate today lol.... I bet it would have been fun to watch as a spectator.

Idle turned up to 3k... Clutch in... half a mile an hour... rev and dump. Lol. **** me.

It's going to take me some time to get this smooth. Stalled it a bunch, and got a nasty habit of dumping it... getting it about half way to bp... and pulling the clutch back in.
Lol... I'm gunna need forks by the end of the year if I keep this up.

But yeah, what a great day. Got to the point where I could only put in about 5 tries before I couldn't pull the clutch in anymore.

So... Idle here I come!

Re: Dumping the clutch

And for clarification... it's NOT dump and rev at the exact same time right?

It's more like you rev first... and... "dump" isn't really the right word... it's more like you ease it out. Is that right or wrong?

If I rev and dump, I usually bog and or stall.

Don't let the clutch out too slow or you'll might hurt yourself!

I like the description slip or slightly disengage. Feather rev and slip smooth vs bwahh gerlunk or simalar sound,LOL.

Re: Dumping the clutch

the trick is to accelerate as you release the clutch and with stock gear you have to accelerate pretty hard and then be ready to back off the throttle a little bit while covering the rear brake

Re: Dumping the clutch

You'll learn in time how to feather the clutch cos you'll be rippin that bike up real fast startin off but l8rs on you "should" be bringin it up just nicely. Takes time and practice.

Re: Dumping the clutch

I had no clue what you were talking about till the end. Still feels like drag racing just in a stunting way. Clutch in, light turns green in your head and you rev and go. nice and smooth that way for me. Ill show you way to the dark side hehe

Re: Dumping the clutch

2nd day of Idle practice:
Did a bunch of sit-downs with this launch technique today... and a few stand-ups. I need to get a video camera. lol

I'm anything but graceful. My friend who I practice with caught IDLE for the first time today! There was definately the look of... ooh ****... i'm doing it... wait... now what!?... on his face. lol It was sweet.

I got a few good launches up towards the bp, and look squirrelly I'm sure... I need lots of practice. But the weather is good. Bike is ready, and I'm motivated. So here we go!

Re: Dumping the clutch

If you have a quad or no someone with one practice on that. It can teach you how to clutch it up and balance point.

nobody I know.

I can btw ride out wheelies if I'm under power... like 30 mph for miles.

The hard part of this, is re learning my launch technique, and concentrating on shutting down the throttle. It's just kinda freaky, and my brain / muscle memory isn't there yet.

Re: Dumping the clutch

So got my new sprockets on... -1/+13...

Absolutely awesome.

The timing problem I was having with my previous gearing is now gone. It comes up nice and easy, and very predictable.

Also, because I'm on the 929, I still get like 75mph at about 7.5k revs... so perfect there too. I don't think I'll be missing the top end any time soon.

My stunting buddy and I are both learning how to clutch em up this way, and our goal is to learn idle... so all practicing will go towards that right now.

So there's my update. The gearing is rad... can't wait to practice again tomorrow.

Re: Dumping the clutch

you need to learn how to use the brake before you can do slow stuff.... if you know how to use the brake catching it in the bp comes natural to you before you can catch idle..

just go out there and do some wheelies and just try to keep the same speed and dont speed up.... by the time you get that you'll beable to pop it from slow speed

baby steps my friend...

Re: Dumping the clutch

You don't need sprockets to learn idle..

Sprockets are just gonna make it HARDER to get smooth and learn idle..

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys.

So yeah, I've seen the vids, and read the posts. I know it's possible to do idle on stock gearing, and that big gearing doesn't make it easier to be smooth.

I can do a pretty good job at keeping wheelies at the same speed using the brake, and have ridden ones at like 25-35 mph for over a mile. So I'm with ya on keeping em the same speed, and slowing em down.

The bigger gearing is definitely helping me launch them the right way... ie from like 1/2 a mile an hour straight up. With my other gearing I would bog it a bunch, stall, or just not go to bp very quickly. (with clutch in and dump technique)

I managed to catch and ride idle for the first time today in a sitdown. Started from a super slow crawl... clutched it hard... caught it with my brake kind of soft... and rolled the throttle off.

Kinda scared the **** out of me because the throttle was off but the wheelie stayed high. Much higher than I'm used to... I just floated there, and I just rolled along for probably 2 parking spaces until I came to my senses and brought it back down with the brake. Lol. It's was definitely awkward not having the bike under power like I'm used to. But was good all in all.

So yeah, Can't say I'm going the right way of learning em... but I currently rely on the brake for all my wheelies and am just trying to learn the clutching technique that everyone else uses.

ie slow to dead stop, clutch in... slip it out/rev, and roll it back off.

And though I still launch it lower than the normal stunter, it now sounds the same as the skilled people I watch, so as far as that goes, I'm pretty sure I'm on the right path.

Anyways, I'm babbling.
