A Very Good Question????????????
A Very Good Question????????????
You know when a cop takes your liscence, registration, and insurance card back to the car and looks all that **** up.
Can he actually look up your insurance policy and see that it is valid (as in you actually have a policy), and what all it covers?
or does he just match up the name on your insurance card with you DL and registration and make sure the insurance coverage dates are not expired.
been wondering this for a while, but no one I know knows for sure

Re: A Very Good Question????????????
yes they see if your policy is up to date, they run the policy number because some people stop paying on it but it still hasnt expired on your card so they make sure you are paying
Re: A Very Good Question????????????
I don't know about VA but in Indiana they can't look up your policy, here all you need is just proof of insurance. From all the cops I know they told me that they don't take the time to call your insurance company to find out.
Re: A Very Good Question????????????
Here in NC, I think it takes an extra step, so a lot of them probably won't do it, but I know that they can find out. I think it might be through the registration -- a lapse will flag the registration so when you get pulled over it shows.
Re: A Very Good Question????????????
If you have a fake insurance card from the beginning of your registration, there is no way for them to tell if your insurance is active, or not. If you bought insurance, and stopped paying on it, chances are that your insurance carrier will report this to the D.M.V, and suspend your registration. That is how he could tell whether you have insurance, or not. In that case you'll know because D.M.V sends you a notification of your suspended registration. I've been riding with fake insurance cards for 14 years, and gotten pulled over quite a number of times, and not once has a police officer mentioned anything about my false insurance. So in short, I'm 99.9% sure that they can't check if you have real, or fake insurance. At least not in C.T., or N.Y. the only two states I've gotten pulled over in.
Re: A Very Good Question????????????
here in california they passed a new law forcing the DMV and your insurance company to keep up to date info on ya. So if you get insurance then dont pay your bill (the insurance is usually stated that its good for a year-even if you stop paying) you'll get a letter in the mail from DMV forcing you to keep insurance or lose that paticular vehicle registration. All bad.
Re: A Very Good Question????????????
Yep same here.... thats why theres a shitload of people that go get insurance to get a verification form for 6 months then cancel it... it works in case ya get pulled over but your fucked if you get into a wreck...
