Just installed UNI filter... sounds like it's spitting?

I just installed my UNI pod filter. I dropped the clip on the needle to the 4th position. (from the top, two up from the bottom) It starts and runs ok, (after the usual lengthy warm up) but at idle and just cracking the throttle it makes a sound kinda like spitting or something. It goes away as the revs climb, and the bike seems to run ok with no sputtering or hesitation. Is this normal? Is it just the sound of air sucking in that one little lung that used to be muffled by the airbox? That's kinda what I'm thinking...

It does seem to have a little more pep to it, it pops the front right up in 1st with little other help needed, and 2nd seems to take less of a tug than it used to.

One more thing... I ran the filter dry. I picked the filter up from BBR (nice living only 10 miles away) and talked to one of the guys there and he said they all run their UNIs dry as if they oil them they just gunk up with dust/dirt right away. Anyone else do this or think it's really gonna hurt anything just running it dry and making sure it's cleaned when needed?

i have always applied alittle filter oil just like my big bike.. i think it helps trap dirt particles.....any dirt in the engine is gonna be bad news in the long run!!!!!!!!!

if you are riding it in dusty conditions i would put some oil on it. but if your just cruising around the street you should be alright. all the dirt that is getting gunked up on your filter would otherwise be in your motor. and i would rather have it gunked up on my filter than in my motor.
