American Suzuki's Ben Spies crashed hard today at Daytona International Speedway. At around 3:30 local time, Spies was riding his GSX-R1000 on the 3.56 mile circuit when he crashed spectacularly just as he crossed the finish line stripe at 186 miles per hour. Debris from the crash littered the area and the remains of the bike went up in flames after it came to rest in the NASCAR turn one area.
The exact cause of the crash is unknown at this time but insiders say tire failure is the suspected cause. Spies and teammate Aaron Yates were testing prototype tires for Dunlop in Florida.
Ben, who went to the hospital after the crash, hopped up from the tarmac very quicky after coming to a stop from his wild ride. When contacted via telephone, Ben's crewchief Tom Houseworth said he had just visited Spies at the hopsital. "He's in good spirits. He's alert and positive about the work we did before the crash," said Houseworth.
Spies was solidly in the 1:48 lap time range on race tires before the accident. Aaron Yates is said to have been circulating in the sub-1:50 range as well.

Team Suzuki rider Ben Spies, the standout of the paddock in 2003 for his amazing rides on both the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R600, underwent skin graft surgery this morning at 1:00 AM after his horrific 180mph crash at the Speedway yesterday afternoon.
As we reported here yesterday, Spies suffered a tire failure on or about the start finish line of the front banking at the Daytona International Speedway, destroying his Superbike and giving himself a very nasty case of "road rash". Spies has suffered abrasions to his arm, leg, back and buttocks.
Team Suzuki sources say that Spies should leave the hospital this evening, and then he will be driven in a motorhome back to his home state of Texas.
