need help making stunt video game
Ok i read all 8 pages and saw that no one thought of calling the game "Stunt Life". All of us know what it is and it's not swayed to one group of riders. Also that riding spirits game sucked ****, it had a lot of potential to be the bike version of Grand Turismo but they didn't put enough into it. Do they make Speed Kings for PS2? I can't think of anything to and to the concept of the game most of what has been said I agree with.
Ok first off i am suprised that no one has mentioned some of the features in atv fury for ps2 in all nine pages of discussion! I know it is a quad racing game but everyone i know that plays it played the racing portion for a day and then permamently moved in the freestyle section to see who can ride the longest slowest wheelies, do the best stoppies etc... The other nice feature of atv fury is the garage, how many people on stunlife have asked what tire pressure is best for 12 o clocks, well if you have a garage in this game you can play with whatever pressure you want till you find a good one, also things like fast idle adjustment features. Also someone mentioned the feel aspect of wheelies instead of a meter, I would agree on this. ATV Fury does not have a wheelie meter but it relies on the feel method and i think it works great, the feel method would simply require a person who is more skilled with the analog control(forward/back/side to side). Ok enough on my ATV Fury comparisons/ideas now i will start my overall opinions and ideas. Hold on here goes.
1) Name: "Stunt Life"(maybe add the word motorcycle in there somewhere) seems like a good name to me. I disagree with the "need a big name to promote it idea" because while big names sell games initially, gameplay make video games into legends. If "Starboyz stuntapalooza" sucks in the gameplay department, then when "Starboyz Stuntapalooza II" comes out it won't sell for crap because there are a lot of pissed off gamers who got screwed once by the catchy name.(I see this as a multiple installment progressive game like how the madden football series was updated each year with new players ,teams, stats, etc..maybe not each year with a stunt game but you get the idea)
2) Advertising/Sponsership: A good point was made by someone who said auto mfg. companies don't like negative press about their products. Therefore, getting one of the big four to support is not very likely if there are negative/illegal activities in the game. Wheelies on a track is not negative, wheelies on a highway or public road is, therefore if everything took place on a racetrack in the XSBA fashion maybe sponsership could be pulled of but from the sounds of it JC you want this to be realistic therefore there is gonna be some negative stuff in the game, comes with the territory.
3) Non-Gameplay features: If anyone has played Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance then you know that modern gaming systems have TONS of room for extra features. In mortal kombat this is in the form of the krypt(spelling??) As you go along fighting you collect coins(silver/gold/platinum??) With the coins you can open caskets containing second costums for fighters, pre game release character sketches, different fighting arenas, more coins, etc.. I can't remember how many different things you can open but there is a TON. JC being a gamer you know what i am talking about if not go get MK: Deadly Alliance and look at how many tombs there are. Now for "Stunt Life"(I will refer to the video game as this in the rest of my statements) these extra items could be things like bike paint schemes for your bling bike, bike sketches, music selections, helmets, real video clips of stunts, and other non-bike related items. Like i said there should be tons of these items so that you have goals to reach and don't get bored.
4) Game setup: Ok as far as the whole "nobody likes sims, dont make it too hard for the casual gamer" Blackholemotorsports.com and tell me there is not a market for sims automotive type games. Now i am not saying make this game a sim. There are ways around strict sims games. Its called game options: simulation mode and arcade mode. Arcade mode has less features less things to do but is easier to handle and fast paced. Now as most of us know the fun in stunting is LEARNING to stunt that is what drives us all. Therefore the simulation mode should have much more technical aspects of the riding.
5) Game staging: I have a love/hate relationship with the grand tourismo licensing system(i mostly hate it cause i cant get the licenses that i want but then again i dont play it that much so lack of practice on my part is probably at fault) Also most good fighting games have a practice section/tutorial section. What i see for "Stunt Life" is a multi-faceted practice arena broken down like such:
1) infinity X infinity concrete pad: do whatever you want for however long you want until you get bored
2) learning stages: start as squid, learn tricks to become amateur, learn more technical tricks to become pro(different levels = different comps, different riding aids, etc...)
The next part in the game staging would be the competition structure. Like i mentioned before, different level riders go to differnt level comps(local, national, international) just like real life, joe schmoe the squid doesn't sign up for XSBA round 1 and go ride a wheelie 1 ft off the ground at 100mph, so he better not be allowed to in the video game. Winning comps you get trophies and prizes. Why not set up a point system and make a season out of it?
Since you want the free ride element in there too, here goes. Design should be close to Tony Hawk free ride, dont just let the guy loose in the city to do nothing but ride around, give him some goals and a direction. In tony hawk you collect letters to spell words, you grab video tapes, and do tricks for points. In "Stunt Life" the same rules apply in order to make the street scene enjoyable. Maybe have an element where you stop at bike nights to get some tips on where things are located, hot spots for cops, etc...
As far as a racing section goes, i say be different than all the other bike games out there, trash the race idea. If this is a stunt game make it a god damn stunt game, don't waste valuable energy on a half assed racing portion, when that is not what the game is focuses on!
THE BIKE SHOP: Anything you need, imagine all the bike shops in the world combined into one. Stunter stuff, Bling stuff, whatever you can think of to put on a bike is here. Buy it with money from comps. Also a dealership section so you can buy a new bike and F it up real nice!
6) Gameplay: Two sections here:
ARCADE: K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid
People like to have fun so make it brainless. Balance control: make it only forward/back take out the side to side element. Throttle control: Make it liberal if they get off the gas and get right back on it in a wheelie don't have the bike drop right down give them some room to work with.
SIMULATION: Ok here is where the frustration comes in, make it hard, but make it hard in stages. Have selectable difficulties, hell make it that way for Arcade mode too, but it should be on another level! Ok, so for sim gameplay here are some controls i came up with:
Wheelies: Brake, throttle, balance, sight, speed in relation to front wheel height, wind
Stoppies: speed,brake feel(toughy), sight
Combos: button combinations to go from one move to the next
Burnouts: balance, tire spin speed
Thats all i can think of for now, but you get the idea.
7) Game options:
1) Garage: Tires - pressure, company, size(180 on a 6" rim steers has more of a contact patch than a 180 on a 5.5" rim should affect handling)
Bars: Dirtbike, clipons, race clipons
Suspension: Not a huge biggy (but if your rider that YOU design is tiny, or big it may make a difference)
Any other aspect that is adjustable(not including things you can buy i.e. sprockets)
2) Rider design - put yourself in the game Tony Hawk style.( Good opportunity for clothing sponsors) Helmet not included here cause you have to earn a sweet one so you just start with a solid color helmet and clear sheild no mirror shields as a squid. The color is your choice of course.
OK, OK I could keep going and get in depth but my girlfriend is over my shoulder right now and breathing heavily,(its our night and i guess i am ruining it, what did i do??) so i gotta go. Let me know what you think. What did i forget.
Later,
Ben

Holy ****. I really need to get the replys out there more frequently. First off, let me again say that you guys are
All of the ideas have been really good. I wish I had more news for you guys, but we're in the middle of a project right now, so people are reluctant to persue this at the moment, though they like the idea.
Now, some comments on your guys' feedback. I'm gonna start with ben's giant post, and probably not get to anything else
Good **** Ben. I also enjoyed the hell out of ATV's stunt mode. The garage is a definite. Maybe you saw one of my posts that mentioned owning a shop, or maybe even a couple. This is similar in concept to owning businesses in GTA vice city, but I would want to expand on it. The story line leading up to something like this would probably involve sponsorship by a shop, you start getting cheaper repairs, etc. eventually you would either take over ownership of the shop, or start your own. Here's where you can start modding stuff for free (or much much cheaper anyway) make all kinds of adjustments to your bike on your own, buy and sell bikes, have a showroom, etc. Imagine owning your own shop, and being able to pull any bike you like out of the showroom, or having your sales fund your next video production. Which, by the way, I haven't said much about, but I want a really sick video editing feature. When my buddies and I started stunting, my roomate immediately went out and bought a camcorder. It's a very important part of the culture to me. Imagine being able to piece together video footage into a lengthy video, and sell it in the world for notariety, cash, whatever. Imagine being able to download other ppl's videos online. So much potential I think.
Anyway, as for the balance meter comment Ben, I agree. I don't wanna see some lame meter on screen like hawk. I'd much rather use feel and visual cues. However, we would definitely have one during development, just to balance things and make sure it's all working right. If it works well, isn't cheesy, maybe it would go in as an optional thing. Maybe on an easy setting, or Arcade as opposed to Sim.
I agree with the name comments. I'm not at all concerned with that right now. Stuntlife actually wouldn't be bad, BUT AGAIN, I NEED TO STRESS THAT THESE ARE ALL JUST MY OPINIONS, AND IN NO WAY REFLECT WHAT THE COMPANY WOULD DO, THINK, OR SAY ABOUT IT. Sorry, had to get that out of the way. I will say that to higher ups, connecting a name to a game is always preferred. As for sponsorship, for sure. I think the companies that currently sponsor stunting would jump all over it. As for bike manufact. You're right. Probably not. If we could do it, gravy. If not, we'll work around it.
Non-gameplay features. I agree. I actually used to work at Midway, so I'm very familiar with their reward system. However, I prefer in game type rewards, such as the bike shop stuff, making your own vids, etc. But there would definitely be unlockable stuff like pro vids and what not.
Sim/Arcade - Totally agree. As a rider, I want an option to get into the more technical side of riding, but I do know that most casual gamers won't feel this way, so yes, I want to try to cater to both audiences.
Game staging - practice areas, for sure. Through the front end (menu) you could access "infinity" practice areas, but a huge part of the game would be going to practice areas in the world. Air strips, wheelie spots, whatever. The rankings would be a definite. Squid, Am, Pro. Comps, a definite. Before you could even do any real comps, you'd have street comps with other riders. I used to love Stoppie comps down in Diego on Sundays! Props to Tech Way! That ****'s prolly dead now though. Anyway, the freeride stuff I agree with, but it would prolly be more like GTA style stuff than Hawk. Imagine this. You're out freeriding on the freeway, not even really looking for any goals or missions, just practicing freeway stunts. Lets say you do a 2 mile wheelie, boom, the game spawns in a pack of riders behind you who catch up, give you props, and challenge you to a little wheelie comp, right there on the freeway. This would be a dynamic goal, and I'd use a ton of them to make the world feel alive.
Anyway, hopefully that's enough for you guys to chew on while I treat my carpel tunnel. All of the feedback is great, and if you have questions on how I might do something, let me know. Sorry to all those I haven't responded to and any PM's I haven't gotten back to. I'm trying, but like I said, crazy busy. I'd like to cover your guys' ideas on controls. The system I have in mind makes a bit more sense. No offense. I'll get into it at a later time. Back to the grind for now.
Oh, a quick note. I'd like to get some footage of bike night next week. I think I'm gonna have a buddy or two roll up there with me in a car, then try to meet up with us at a wheelie spot. So, I should be up there about 10 or so. Anyone who wants to meet me, hit me up before hand. I'm riding a yellow/black beat *** looking 2001 929. I was doing 140 last sat on the freeway, and my left fairing ripped off of my bike, so I should be easy to spot. My ****'s seriously starting to fall apart. God I wish I was rich.

Ok I have read everyones in put on this and it sounds awesome. THis is what you should do man. Take your boss with you to a spot and have him see this stuff first hand and talk to the riders. Then Contact the teams and figure out how this could work and get a few people to make like a demo game. Like hook them up to the sensor ***** and have them do a few tricks. You know just like a 10 minute demo for this then show your boss it man. Even if he hates bikes he will still be down for a game like this man. I could and would play this for hours and hours. You should have it like umm a football game kind of. There is lets say 20 teams and at first your by yourself putting around learning to do tricks and stuff. You have to practice and all that to get better. Kind of like ATV2: (the stunt one) you have to learn the tricks and pass a training course to get mad tricks together. On that game i can bust like 300 yard endos. In the begging its hard to do it 1 foot. So i think if you brought a few people from some teams in and had them all explain it to your boss he would be down for it. Its a great idea and should be way fun. But good luck man and i hope to see it soon!!!!
I was in talks with a game development company in Texas called Terminal Reality. I created a Game treatment for my stunting game. was going to have a deal, and move on to creating the game design, but they broke my confidentiality agreement and sent my treatment to take 2 interactive, a year before vice city hit the market.
I terminated the communication with the company and threaten to sue...they havent developed the game because I copyrighted the rights to the idea....the situation was a mess for 6 months....so close, yea so far. .
Still have my game treatment handy..havent reshopped it since...was 2 years ago I believe...
if you want more information you may email me at bizproduction@aol.com

First off, dope site. The info here is unparalleled, and everyone on the boards seems to be really cool.
So, here's the deal. I'm a game designer at a major video game company in Los Angeles. I've been riding for about a year now. (I'm not a great stunter, I'm just getting comfortable with stand-ups, but I can roll a stoppie out better than most riders) Anyway, I started riding down in Diego, and just recently moved up here. I've been trying to pitch a bike stunting game for some time now, and think I may have finally gotten through to my boss. I've shown them videos and what not, but what got them really interested was my description of last week's wed. night bike night. I told them about a guy who did a christ on the 405, over the 105 on-ramp, which is an extremely high one lane on-ramp that goes over the 405.
Anyway, these are my questions:
-This one seems stupid, but how many of you guys think a game about this (start out learning to trick, get involved with crews, have comps, make it professional) would be a good idea? I think that most everyone on these boards would buy it, but I just wanted to get it from the horse's mouth.
-How many of you are in the LA area, and would be down to help me get some **** on tape?
-Is anyone familiar with the wed night rides here, and can you recommend a video that is representative of what goes on? What I'm looking for is something that illustrates the street aspect of the sport, more than the competition style stuff. A ton of bikes taking over the freeways, ppl running, crashes, that sort of stuff.
Anyway, any info, support, criticism is appreciated. I've been pushing for this for a long time now, and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope this gets ppl excited, and I promise the game would be straight

I can send you some footage of the ride we just had. 250+ bikes 5 diffferent teams (PBR, Starboyz, Stl Shockers, Streetfighterz, Psychoboys) rockin mad **** on the highway with all the bikes behind 'em. That should pump the corporate blood. You would have to have perfect bikes, crashed bikes, duct tape, zip ties wheelie bars, all the goodies.
