right or wrong?
right or wrong?
I'm still learning. I was practicing 1st gear sitdown power wheelies every now and again over the summer. When I say practicing I dont mean I went out strictly to wheelie, just messing around while riding. I couldnt get the timing down most of the time I guess. I got them to come up from time to time, but way too fast and way too much speed so I always backed off.
I got frustrated and started practicing 2nd gear sitdowns CLUTCHING. I practiced those for a good 6 months. Couldnt get it to come up at all for a while. Eventually I started to get them up consistantly, when I actually started to go out for wheelies spacifically toward the end of the riding season. I only got them to come up about a foot or so.
My question is should I go back to 1st gear power wheelies to learn more throttle control, or should I keep practicing 2nd gear clutch wheelies? I feel way more comfortable doing them in 2nd gear because it come up slower and more consistant. I feel like I can actually do the baby step process when it comes up slower, thus I can gradually increase the height. In first It comes up hella fast, never consistant, and it sound like I'm going to blow my bike up. I hate reving the nuts out of my shiat.
What do you fellas think I should do. Get to BP in second because Im more comfortable, or hold off untill I get 1st gear down.
Feedback would be

Re: right or wrong?
I'm practicing my wheelies doing 2nd gear clutch. I find it way easier to control than my first gear. I can do first gear half *** if i clutch. I cant power wheelie..it comes up and i cant back off throttle so i let it off completely getting a tankslapper. I clutch everything.
I've been practicing for like 3-4months now. I'm starting to get really consistent with bringing it up in 2nd, i just cant hold them up longer than a few secs.
2nd gear is easier to control, i think. Its just you have to go so much faster to do them.

Re: right or wrong?
I hear what your saying on the 2nd gear stuff coming up more consistant and comfy. 2nd is a faster mph, but 1st gear coming up so fast scares me more than my speed. I feel like all I have to do now is work on getting it higher in 2nd. I heard that first teaches more throttle control though. I dont want to skip out on that if you cant learn it in 2nd. Control is key. I'll learn all over again if I have to.
Re: right or wrong?
Im prolly gonna get flack for suggesting this to you guys, but here it is...
Go down a tooth or up 2 or so.. I could clutch my 600 all day long in 2nd and it would never wheelie (at first, now I could wheelie with less teeth). But when learning, gearing down will help you because timing doesn't become such an issue. BUT.. but, timing in the end is everything. Practice = better timing. I think I saw one of your avatars and your on a 954/929?, anyways you might not need gearing but one down couldnt hurt.
**edit, sorry i see both of you are on F4i's.. -1+2
Also, I always used to think I was gonna loop it when it rocked back.. until I started learning 12's... then I discovered just how FAR the bike has to be to where a lil back brake will save ya.... hint.
Good luck man!

Re: right or wrong?
learn by clutching it up in first from about 10mph. It comes up faster, but is much more predictable and easier to control. Also you will have more of the tach to work with before you hit the redline, than powering up first.
