Saving Fork Seals??

Do any of you guys have a suggestion for prolonging fork seal life? Don't get me wrong, I know why they blow out, but I was wondering if you have any input on compression dampning settings or fork set-up to help assuage the stress. I keep mine fairly stiff and seem to run through them (seals) more often than I think I should.

I don't like to discrimate, so I try to abuse both ends of the bike equally. I'm pretty sure I know the time of death on this last set--it 's closely tied to my getting used to the new gearing (-1, +4). But on average, I'm only getting about 5K out of them. Like I mentioned, I keep my suspension pretty tight (for the twisties).

I live Downtown, but I've only been here a few month's and haven't met anyone in Sac yet. I ride with a few guys from Davis, but they're only into the corners--a few of 'em can knee down but couldn't get a wheel of the ground if their life depended on it; it just doesn't seem natural.

Sounds like somethings wrong there.

Maybe your inner fork tube is scratched or damaged and its killing the seals faster.

It could be the way they are being installed. Maybe the the mechanic isn't being carful installing them and damaging them then. Shops don't always do the best job when it comes to fixing your bike.

avoid moustraps like nags said, keep your fork tubes CLEAN, wipe em down all the time if you are going through them that fast and look for scratches on your fork tubes, if they are scratched you are screwed. Scratched fork tubes eat seals fast.

my first set lasted 16k miles, then i they started leaking. now i go through seals about once a month. it sucks.

and ya, try to keep dirt out of there, that's what causes them to leak, the slamming down just puts a lot of pressure on them fiding those dirty spots.

i think i'm just going to get new forks cause i cna't figure mine out for ****.

i've got 13k on mine, no problems yet, i always check them expecting them to be leaking, but they haven't started, and i've only started doing wheelies since i got this bike, so there's been plenty of hard landing, even though they've been pretty smooth lately, i made sure to spend the extra money on a front stand that lifts the bike by the head, so i can ake the forks apart myself when they need replaced

one of my seals was leaking at the begining of this year and then the wind tried blowing me over doing a long stand up and I shot the other seal completely out of the tube. I didn't know it , my buddy stopped me he thought I blew the engine. Fork oil blew all over the headers and blue smoke was pouring out.nobody on here ever gave me a good anwser on what to run for settings, I think it'll just be trial and error.

stock settings....do'nt play with anything else. only thing i would even screw with for stunting would be puttin stiffer springs in. and NO, tightening the preload isn't the same as using stiffer springs.
