Doing a stand up wheelie & shifting

Ok guys, I pretty much have the whole wheelie concept down now but i'm still looking for some improvement.

I can clutch it in first or second or just bounce and load to get the front end up with no problem.

After that I always sit down and shift to the next gear and then to the next gear.

It seems like I can't shift while I'm doing a stand up because most of my weight is on the peg. When I'm sitting down I can shift into the next gear no problem.

Whats the deal here. Am I just retarted or are other people having the same problem?

Oh yea, for some reason I turn the front wheel when I'm riding a long one. I think its because I'm sitting down and leaning to one side to see.

WTF?

yea, I think its just how your doing it. If you stand with the pegs in the middle of your feet, you should be able to rock your toe back to shift without a problem. If you need to, move your linkage down to make it more natual for your foot to shift when standing. Have fun and practive!

The way I learned how to shift was just shift your weight to your right foot slide you left foot under and shift. Just remember if anything feels weird just put the front wheel down. It takes some sometime but I have no problem shifting now don't even think about it. To make it easer if you know your gonna shift put your foot under the shifter before you pull it up. hope this helps

or just keep constant pressure upwards with your foot on your shifter and when you feather the gas to keep it up, it will shift automaticly

dont shift it hard on the tranny, i can shift during stand-up but i use the clutch but even then its real hard on the bike. just get it up to the BP and keep it there no need to shift!!

Thanks for the responses

Theres only one way for me to get it down and thats practice, pratice, practice. Unfortunatly its a sloppy snow/rain mix around Chicago rite now so all the people who live where its warm and sunny all year round. Yea I'm talking to you all you Flordia people. Chicago weather sucks my ***.

I've got real slow 12's down on the 400ex. It's all about the rear brake baby.

I'll be practicing that more on the bike come spring.

*** that, I've been shifting wheelies for a while now, and I plan on continuing to shift wheelies.

My question was about doing a standup wheelie and shifting while standing up.

I can shift fine sitting down, its just when I'm standing I have a harder time.

Another one, I wish this one was on the other side so I could see what I'm doing with my foot

Thats the problem, I can shift fine sitting down. I'll ride the ***** all the down the road sitting down balancing it in 3rd and 4th but when I try to do a long stand up I have a hard time shifting while standing up.

that is because the balance point is in a different position while standing, and you have to get use to it...
it sounds like your just chaising your front wheel and not have it high enough

why is shifting during a wheelie hard on the tranny? I thought you only dammage the tranny when you hear grinding.

Don't worry about the turning the wheel thing. It looks cool Just make sure you never put it down that way.

since your not at the balance point you have nothing to worry about.. just gotta remember that at the BP you dump 13k RPMs down to 9k in a few milliseconds its gonna jolt you.. its pretty sensitive when your up high..
I got really ****ed up about three weeks ago.. it gives me the jibliejiblies just thinking about shifting in a wheelie.
