Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
your bike is a wet clutch car oil will **** your **** up man you will be eating clutches like crazy there is also way different additives in CAR oil vs BIKE oil. pay the extra money and dont be cheap get actual motorcyle oil
Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
I've run everything from super tech, mobile clean 5000, and rotella in ALL my bikes
40k miles on my f4i's stock clutch, currently running super tech 10-40!
**** what they say, improper clutch use burns clutches up! Not the oil.
Some oils might make an already failing clutch slip more, but a perfectly good clutch shouldn't slip on regular old dino car oil.
Now some synthetic car oils have been said to make clutches slip, so when dealing with synthetics, you ened to be a little more carful.
But just because I was bored, and because I can, I ran a oil that specifically people state will make your clutch slip, I ran it 2-3k miles in my f4i. That was about 10k miles ago.
Now I'm back to super tech, still not slipping.

Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
but that **** is WAY to thick for a f4i.. HAve you ever watched how long it takes to build oil pressure? Or do you not run gauges?
Just running 15-40 rotella in my bike, would DOUBLE The time it takes to build pressure..
And when I drop my bike, and it flips up onto the tank, regular 10-40 can take me 20-40 seconsd to build pressure, with 15-40, it was sometimes 30-90 seconds to get pressure!
I've had my oil pan off 4 times, and my oil pump out 3 times, everything is in spec, I don't get what the deal is.

You might be fine with what you run, but honestly, that sounds way to thick at cold start. Might not be bad if you ONLY start your bike when its above like 60f, but I definitely wouldn't run that thick of oil every below 60f..
Hell I'd still be nervous anytime the bike is cool. But I do a lot of riding down to 20f, so I run a mix of 5-30 and 10-30 in the winter

Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
IMO the most important thing is changing your oil often, especially if you mainly stunt your bike ,and especially if you ride the clutch a lot!
Bike oil gets bad fast, it gets clutch particles in it which then are flowing through your bearings.. You want good, fresh, clean oil in there as often as possible.
If your bike is strictly a lot bike, and most its life is in 1st gear, I'd change the oil every 500-1000 miles max..
I go 500-1500 on my bike, oil changes cost $13 ($2.50 super tech oil filter).. My bikes about 1/3 life stunting 2/3 street

Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
some car oils have an ''energy saving seal'' and that oil has additives that can make clutches slip but car oil that doesnt have the energy saving seal shouldnt be a problem ..
as far as the 20/50 being too thick thats not an issue where i am in south florida

Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
Whatever happened to listening to the old guys?
Re: car oil vs motorcycle oil?
dont skimp on your engine...give it something good, every time i have put car oil in my bike it made my clutch slip...once in my warrior and it was damn near new, so i dont wanna hear about how your clutch was already going out... there is obviously a dif between the two and its not just in price
