F4i 1054 miles. Help!!!!!!!

What's up all! Ok story goes like this.... Guy buys wrecked 06 cbr f4i with 1054 miles. Needs all plastics headlight exhaust a few brackets and fairing stays and everything under stator side case from needle bearing out including starter reduction gear pin ect. Guy has never worked on a bike but handy with a wrench and a manual. Guy was told bike would "run for sure" with stator componets. Guy got and installed componets to find out engine was siezed. Guy soaks with marvel and does everything else possible to free engine. This did not work. Guy decides to become a bike mechanic and field strip and drop the sob. Guy dismantles engine to find a bent crank shaft (.0038") bound up on bearing shell). Guy buys new crank Installs torks and plastiguages shaft. Guy finds, surprise surprise, almost no wear on the first aim bearing journals and on the 4th...... The one closest to impact point on stator cover. Dident even compress the .001-.003 p.guage. Guy removes bearing shell to find crack in upper crank case half. Ok so guy is pissed and dosent know what to do. As I mentioned I've never worked on a bike but I have been extreemly carefull and dilligent to pay close attention and understand what everything is doing in there. I have about 75 percisly labled ziplocks and notes and pictures. Is it possible to replace an upper crank case half?? There is not much left to the engine at this point! I don't know if I should call it quits now and part out the bike and try again or to keep going. I'm looking for some advise please. I don't have any real attachment to this one in particular and still would have all the fairings and other minor things to replace but I mean come on last production year with a thousand miles???? Can't be another one out there right?

Re: F4i 1054 miles. Help!!!!!!!

Thanks mike for the reply. Everyone I talk to says they wished the week was on YouTube. Bike came from Washington state. Someone there went for a hell of a ride. Pipe tip was scraped and bent up must have gone up lost it and aparently landed it directly on stator cover. Sucks to put my mind to buying a "new" motor to replace my uhhh new? Motor. I don't think many people have the opportunity to crack a motor with 1000 miles on it but it's kinda hard to think it's trash

You might be able to find someone to weld the case. Better start looking for aluminum or exotic metal welder in your area. That would probably be your only option besides finding another motor and keeping this one for spare parts.

Though if somehow the impact was hard enough to bend the crank some how I would think the whole case may be tweaked. Not sure if there is really any concern about that or how you would even check.

Damn I'd be pissed... I'd bring the bike in pieces to the guy that sold it to me and tell me to give me my money back or each piece of this bike is going through some part of his house and/or truck. Dude sold it saying it ran, if you had a witness during the sale that can confirm he said that, and you didn't sign any agreement that you were buying "as is" you can sue him under the lemon law. Except I dunno how long hes had the bike before he started worken on it. I doubt the lemon law would still be valid if hes had the bike for like 6+ months.

He would have to check with someone about his state in order to do something like that. Lemon law and other types of legislation pertaining to used vehicle sales vary from state to state.

Re: F4i 1054 miles. Help!!!!!!!

Is it possible to replace just the upper crank half or is it a mated pair with the lower or possibly the head? All this assuming I could find it?

Re: F4i 1054 miles. Help!!!!!!!

03 raven. Thanks for the idea although I'm not sure it can be welded! The crack runs through the main journal shell bearing seat. It's cracked through to the casting hole above the shaft spindle on stator side. Even if it was possible to weld it sucessfully the bearing seat in the upper crank housing would have to be machined smooth for the bearing shell to seat properly. Then bearings would need to be changed to male up the differance. If it were even possible it would not be cheap. Not to mention I liv on the coast of Oregon and the closest thing to a welder or machinist works out of the back of a carquest. Not Gina happen here

My dads an attorney. Lemon law dosent work on this one. And I think lemon law only works with new vehicles. Wouldent be a lemon if it worked for someone else, and it might only cover manufacture defects or problems

Yea if that's the case I would try to find a new motor or if there is anything you can do to reclaim funds. We lucked out and found a whole bike with 6,000 miles on it for $1200 when my buddies F4i threw a rod recently. Just swapped all the stunt parts onto the new bike and then found another F4i motor for the extra frame for $250 locally on craigslist. So he ended up with 2 f4i lot bikes for ~$2500. Good luck with everything and be try to be patient with it all(if you can), I'm sure you will figure something out.

And your question about the engine cases mating up since I didn't answer that. I can check with my buddy with the F4i because I'm not positive. I know for the Yamahas there is a number on the case and the crank you have to use to get the correct main bearings. If the Honda is like that it would mean you would have to find a case with the same bearing code as the lower portion. Probably be easier to find the whole case or running motor. And one thing we learned while sorting out his F4i problem was that the F4 and F4i motors are essential the same, man difference being the throttle bodies, FI system, cluster, and ECU. But pretty much everything else was the same. The cases are the same, the cranks, rods, pistons, valves...etc. If you don't believe or trust me just check a parts fiche online. F4 and F4i motor are the same thing other than the comp, cluster, and fuel delivery system. Now airboxs and stuff like that may be different too but I wasn't worried about comparing all those parts.

f4 and f4i motor are not the same cases... the f4i cases has spots for the crank position sensor and camshaft position sensor... you can swap an f4 motor with an f4i motor if you take the throttle bodies, ecu, airbox, wiring harness from the f4i
