636 shifting problem
636 shifting problem
I seem to be fixing my 636 more than im riding it.
I was in the lot tonight, I was in mid first gear and shifted into second. Rode in second for a couple feet and than it made kind of a clunking noise and kicked it out of second into neutral. Thought my chain broke, so I stopped and everything seemed fine. Started riding and shifting up or down into anygear(including neutral), its almost impossible to shift. The shift lever is hard as a rock.
The lever and linkage are straight. I don't think its going to be a shift fork because it's happening in every gear, and since than what little I rode it it didn't pop out of gear.
Any help/suggestions would be great,
Thanks in advance

Re: 636 shifting problem
sounds like your gonna have to pop off the clutch cover, and check stuff out. Check the shift star, and see if its still in decent shape, and the pawl that rolls on it.
my 636 has jumped into nuetral 5 or 6 times since ive owned it...once while i was jumping to seatstander...threw me over the bars, and ran my **** over

Re: 636 shifting problem
Don't rule out a fork just because it does it through all the gears.
The 636 has 3 shift forks that ride along a "shift drum". The shift forks follow the groves of the shift drum and in turn select the input and output gears.
So its possible that a single bent shift fork would cause the whole transmission to drag and not interlock properly.
Hope that helps some.
I can get more detailed if you think that is the problem. Time consuming, but not overly difficult to change out transmission components.

Re: 636 shifting problem
Not really,
I brought the bike to work the next day and was going to have the tech look at.
Shifted completely fine, as if nothing was wrong. I've ridin it a couple days in the lot now and had no problem since.
There's not much of the season left here, so I will probly rip into it in a week or 2 and make sure everything looks good. I'll definitly check out the shift forks though when I do.
