Cant get 636 to stop overheating..

Did a show last week, and overheated the bike for the first time....puked coolant out all over the place.didnt have any coolant so replaced it water. When i got home, i flushed it, and went to the bikeshop to see what they reccomended for high-temps. and everyone seems to agree on waterwetter& straight water. Tried that, and didnt really notice any diffeernce. my fan runs whenever the bike is on. Now once i ride the lot for 20minutes or so, the bike starts getting real hot, and then starts to bog and have a shitty idle because of being so hot (i assume)
Anyone got any tips/tricks for keepin the 03/04 636s from overheating?
