Motor locked up, Rebuildable????

My buddy is gonna give me his kawi that he has just to get out of his garage. He said the motor is locked up and the wheels are bent. How hard would it be to get the motor back up to par?

locked up because it dropped a valve? it would just be in the top end. Locked up becasuse a crank/rod bearing let loose? you best find a used motor.

he said the oil pump went out and wasn't getting any oil. I know in a car that could cause you to throw a rod but he said I could prolly just resleve it...anyone got any ideas?

Most (I mean usually) of the time your piston/s would seize in the cylinder before your rods/crank seized....this is most likely what happened if the motor wasnt getting oil. It is even very possible your rods & crank bearings are still ok and unharmed.

Re: Motor locked up, Rebuildable????

from what ive heard usually only piston seizes if its a 2 stroke. I talked to a guy at the bike shop today and said its possible it did enough damage it would be easier/cheaper to buy a used motor to replace it...dosent really matter now because the frame has a slight bend by the neck so Im gonna part it out

Re: Motor locked up, Rebuildable????

A friend of mine forgot to tighten his drain bolt and he rode until his bike locked up.....bottom end was fine, the rings started to friction melt themselves to the cylinder wall......bottom end was fine and he was able to buff out his cylinder and reuse it with new piston and rings. Bike runs great once again. granted its a yz250F dirtbike its essentially 1 cylinder from a streetbike motor (exact same) the only difference may be that the 2 motors have different lube systems (dry/wet sump) but even that wont really make much difference. just helping out
