thats cool you sound like you know what your talking about but i wish i had that thing on film it was awsome the way it lit up the garage it was brighter then the sun on a summer day.lol

I can weld if I wanted to, I dont have a TIG machine myself but I have access to more then one...But why am I going to try and learn on things I need done right? I dont even trust the peopele willing to let me use their machines, because they dont do it everyday just have them for personal use and maintnace.

I dont blow steam and every bit of info Ive got Ive gotten from my 20 year certified welder, he has placks on his wall like a doctor for all the differnt types of welding hes certed for....When I go to his shop hes usually welding $20,000 ball screws for CNC machine makers or micro welding under some micro scope ****....I trust him with anything welding realated, and like I said thats just MY OPINION....If you want listen is up to you...

 

I was wondering because I got on the aluminum alloy association website and they said that many motorcycle wheels were made of 2000 series aluminum because it is very strong but it is typically unweldable. 6061 is made with magnesium and is weldable. I thought it was 6061 at first because the whole outside rim is machined and it is by far the most common type of aluminum.

Asked my welder why you might not have been able to weld that rim and he asked if you were using a small 120volt machine? He said you wont be able to do the same things he came with a smaller 120volt machine, you simply cant generate the current required to weld certain material types and thicknesses....

His machice is Miller 600volt supply and is about 6 feet tall 4feet wide.....

I still assure you your guys your rims are not 6061....

even if it were an amperage issue that wouldn't cause it to do what it did i have been welding since i was 15 or so and now i am almost 39 ...

i have done it for a living in the past , i have worked on every thing from aluminium railings to 20 story buildings and alot of stuff in between hell i even made packer bodies for trash trucks and made aluminiun dumpsters,trust me this rim was not cast aluminium....

maybe it was this 2000 s aluminium he is talking about but the name implies it was made around 2000 and the rim i tried to weld was older then that...

 

Well then you know what your doing and youve seen what my welder does on your buddies stay....Do you still have that rim, not that it matters but I like figureing out puzzles like this.....And unless we actually look at the rim in question I doubt well ever find out what its made from and why you couldnt weld it....

I do have garbage Honda rims here, I could alwys take one to my welder and see what he says....Or even my machinest whos a metalologist or whatever and ask him what he thinks

Since were getting so deep into this can we know why you want to know what your rims are made of? LOL

Yeah true but as long as we get him the info he needs I think its all good...

When I recycle old rims they sure dont give me 6061 money, they just give me cast aluminum prices per pound....I seperate cast from billet when I recycle because they pay more for billet over cast

 

how much do they give for 6061. Ive taken aluminum siding and random aluminum in and got like 65cents a pound or something like that. I didnt know that they differentiated the alloys.
