i think its a magnesium alloy.....

i know kawi wheels are not aluminium,i tried to weld one once and let me tell you that was a mistake........

there were little crazy demon like fire ***** flying around my garage and every time they hit some thing they split into four or five smaller little crazy demon like fire ***** and then those did the same thing ,it was like having a fire works display blow up in my garage.........lol wont do that again, but i would like to throw one in a bon fire just to see what happens..

Re: wheel alloy?

You guys are crazy! Almost all OEM motorcycle wheels are CAST ALUMINUM......If you couldnt weld them thats because cast aluminum is the hardest aluminum to weld because there is alot of other metals mixed into the mix and arent pure aluminum like 6061 billet....You can weld them very easily if you know what your doing, if you dont you'll just melt and eventually blow holes in them....Only some high end limmited edition bikes like some Ducattis come with MAG wheels.....

If your wheels were MAG or billet 6061 they would cost way too much to come OEM on a bike! Also MAG is way too soft for the street, you'll dent a MAG wheel much easier than an OEM cast aluminum wheel....Also MAG needs to be protected from the weather at all times, even little scraches need to be touched up ASAP or that area will start to deteriate fast...

Re: wheel alloy?

well i don't know what it was but it ******* lit up my hole garage and barely even left a mark on the rim.......

that and i have welded many a rear sets and they are cast aluminium , they have never exploded on me like this rim did......

and did't they use a magnesium alloy to make mag wheels back in the day ,hence the word mags.....

They still make MAG wheels today but you know they cost about 3 grand a set, and the same set in aluminum is only about 2grand...

Mag is high end stuff, you might see some engine covers come OEM in MAG these days but not wheels, unless like I said you payed $20,000+ for a special edition Ducati or something like that....

I know what Im talkin about, look at this pic eveything in it has been chemically stripped....The rims on the bottm left are 636 rims, stripped to the bone bare cast aluminum.....All modern sportbike rims are CAST aluminum....

FYI bare MAGNESIUM is a much darker colour then bare aluminum, worked with both alloys and can tell the differnce just holding the part in my hand....
Every OEM sportbike rim I have stripped has been cast aluminum, only OEM parts Ive seen made of MAG are some engine covers...

People polish the lip on their wheels all the time, if they were MAG that would be a very bad idea...1 like I said the ellemets would eat at the bare MAG fast and comprimise the wheels stregnth. 2 polishing MAG dust is poison....

Re: wheel alloy?

well they were darker then my 636 wheels and they were off an older kawi so may be they had some magnesium in the mix ....

the word alloy does mean a mix of metals ,doesn't it ?

and like i said i have welded rear sets before and even a couple of frames and all kinds of differant aluminum and none of it ever explodeded before so i don't know what the hell it was but it wasn't just cast aluminium

Im not doubting your wheel you tried to weld inst aluminum, I dont know what wheel it was and I cant see or touch it...What Im saying is that F4i wheel this guy is asking about is made of aluminum alloy %255.55........GSXR, R6, R1, 954, F4i, 636, etc etc etc......Worked with all of them and they are all aluminum since before my time.....

I personally dont weld I have a professional welder a few streets down the road that does all my welding, hes been TIG welding for 20 years so I just let him do it right...

But I have gotten cracked rims welded just as a temp fix, wouldnt do it for the long term...The weld if done proper will hold but thats not the problem, when you weld you draw material from around the weld. So your weld is strong but youve taken stregth away from the area around the weld.

Thats why GSXR frames crack, its not because of bad welds its from too many good welds so close together....Youll rarely see a weld crack on the middle of the weld there the crack was before the weld, its always right along the endge or a little over more....

Learned my lesson wasting money fixing rims in the past, not worht it IMO....The dents just come back that much easier, rock it till you can get another one but dont expect it to ever be like it was before the damage...

Re: wheel alloy?

well... hrm. if your tig-ing then your adding filler. and if you add the correct amount of fill it doesnt "draw" from surrounding areas. and %90 of the time the weld breaks on the edge of the weld because the welding weakend the area around the weld.
