Re: 02 954 Stunting

I've got the exact same problem. Just bought a minty '03 954. 1st pops up no problem. I've been trying 2nd gear sitdowns for about 3 days now, and it only comes up a little bit.

I KNOW it will come up in 2nd, I'm just too freaked out to give it any gas. My last bike was a '98 gixxer 600 though. Big step.

I've been putting my *** up against the front of the passenger seat and trying to take as much weight off the front as i can before dipping the clutch. I've been trying to shift out of 1st too. One of my buddies rides an R1 and starts just about every wheelie in 1st, and shifts through the gears.

No doubt the 954 gears are tall though- You don't really notice it until you try to do a standup in 2nd. You have to go way faster than you think.
Practice practice. We'll get that sh/t down.
Keep your foot on the brake just in case you find tha sweet spot.

Re: 02 954 Stunting

If you think that the 954 gears are tall you should go ride a ZX10R. I could bounce my 954 up in 2nd at 35mph or faster and clutch 2nd up 20mph or faster......(stock gears)....it all in the technique. Just practice and eventually you will think to yourself what the hell was the problem I had... :YEAH

My problem = 30% Skurred, 50% Overactive Survival Instinct, 20% Shouldn't have bought such a minty bike

Fortunately, all of those can be overcome

Re: 02 954 Stunting

That "minty bike" problem was my problem also. I took it slow and everything was fine till last week. Now I just lost about 5000 dollars from my minty 954........F-ing SUCKSSSSS...........

Take it from me, if you don't want to F-up your bike then don't stunt it. Unless your some god's gift to stunting it is just a matter of time before something will happen................good luck :YEAH

Re: 02 954 Stunting

Recipe to clutch up second sit downs:

Get going at about 30 mph in second. Now the following steps need to be done aggressively and quickly. Pull in the clutch with one finger (just enough to disengage) and quickly and agressively give about half throttle. I said Fast! Hold the damn throttle and let go of clutch. Hold the throttle as its coming up and back off as needed or use the rear brake. This is how it's done. If it doesn't work you need more practice with the technique.

Cant be said any better......

If you still can not get the wheel of the ground it is probably b/c you are not giving enough gas while clutching. That was my at least my problem when I was learning the clutch.

Try this, it might help give you a better idea of how much gas is needed and slow the technique down. For the 954 at least, get the bike going a steady 35mph in 2nd. From there pull the clutch in until the engine rev's. Hold the revs say at around 8k and then as you slip the clutch back out give the bike even more freakin gas from there.........

Obviously when you clutch a bike you want this all to be done a whole lot faster and smoother. But it shure helps to slow the process wayyyyyy down. Once I did that and the front end sky rocketed straight up, I knew then just how much gas/throttle I had to give the bike. From there it was just a matter of smoothing the process out......

Re: 02 954 Stunting

Update.

I decided to go -1 in the front just to speed up my learning curve, since I wasn't able to clutch up 2nd consistantly at all. This thing is a monster now! No more clutching up first gear shlt from 8 MPH now though...

Re: 02 954 Stunting

sit as far back on your seat as you can. im only 140 and i couldnt get it up for awhile then i realized even at my size you need to sit back it makes a world of difference for me. And listen to your engine dont look at the tach it makes it harder.
