2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
just wondering how people are launching their 2nd gear stand ups. is it easier to ride along in 2nd and slip it or to actually pull the clutch in and rev and then dump it? im in the learning curve and want peoples opinions.
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
I just learned how to clutch and damn is it an awesome feeling. I don't do them from a dead stop yet, but I have done them from 15-40 mph. The trick that worked for me was to use one finger on the clutch. I pull it back till its just barely slipping and the rpms are rising and then I let the clutch out fast with one finger. Most of the time the front wheel comes up real fast and close to the balance point. Just be careful bro and take baby steps till you get a feel for what your bike is doing.
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
This worked for me really well... I do a combo of bouncing and slipping the clutch. I like to roll the throttle back, and as your rolling it back (pretty fast) I bounce the bike, slip the clutch in then out as fast as I can with 1 finger @ about 75% throttle (don't pull the clutch all the way in, just slip it to where the lever hits the rest of your knuckles then let it out). So right as you slip the clutch in and out, snap that throttle wide open and give it a little bounce. Once your timing is right, you'll get it... I can bounce 929 with a little clutch up in 3rd and almost 4th.

good luck.

I have a ****** calouse(sp?) on my left middle finger from dumping the clutch so often. I'm working on second gear, but I'm lazy. If I can't get second after a few tries, I just start doing first gear again and try to slow 'em down...

Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
Not very...I just have been doing a lot of wheelies lately...
My clutch pull is also fairly short, it engages/disengages after moving roughly an inch. It's easy enough to flick it in and then dump it.
My only problem with doing 2nd gear stuff is mostly just I don't practice enough. However...standups make me nervous still. As soon as it starts coming up I put it back down, and then I get pissed at myself. It just feels so weird after doing nothing but sit-downs for the past 8 months...

after 8 months of sitdowns, the standups will feel realy weird. i swore to God i was gonna fall off the back everytime i tried one. but after a little prctice i started bouncing and getting up to BP unconciously. it feels hella strange at first, but it works. for the clutch, just do it however you do sitdowns. it comes up easier if you are on the left pass. peg.
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
^ LOL, that's exactly what it feels like...like I'm going to just fall right the hell off. It bugs me because when I'm getting ready to try one I'm completely calm...may as well be washing my hands for as nervous as I am. But when the tire comes up more than a foot it suddenly gets scawwy. Eh...it's starting to cool off again here in Az, so my buds and I will be out practicing more often.
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
just wait till you get the first one up to BP. the first time i got there i just knew my *** was rashed and i chopped the throttle like celery. ****ed up my wrist good and wrenched my bars. i beat myself up then put in another hour of practice till it felt right.
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
I just compressed the front end then hit the throttle..Feels akward at first but once you get timed up it works for miles...however i wouldnt recommend this to learn on..if your just starting out doing 2nds i would just slip the clutch untill it finally gets there same way you shoulda learned wheelies just faster...
Re: 2nd gear standups.. slip or dump clutch?
i notice alot of you guys are doing this on 900's. i have an F2 -1+2 and i am having trouble getting it up more than a foot. i can get first gear standups almost to bp so i'm still hitting the rev limiter(i'm working on it). just wondering if anyone has some tips for getting a 600 up in 2nd gear. thanks
