Clutching Second......

I know this has been discussed but I need some real help from someone who knows what they are doing and can explain my problem.....

Here is my problem, I can clutch my 4-wheeler up in 1st or 2nd and ride a 5-10mph wheelie for hundreads of feet with no problem at all. BUT, when I go to clutch my 954 up in second it either lifts up like 2 inches, spins the tire, or nothing at all.................WHY WHY WHY??????

my first thought was because the 4 wheeler feels to be geared so much lower than my 954 (which has stock gearing) which is more closely like a bike with a huge sprocket.

I would jsut like some advice on why I can clutch a 4 wheeler up no problem and not my 954? What does it sound like I am doing wrong? and explain how to do this is some detail...

THANKS,

Re: Clutching Second......

At 5-10mph you should be clutching up in first.

Re: Clutching Second......

if it spins, then you probably have the power to get it up, just bounce on the pegs and lean back a bit, should work.

Re: Clutching Second......

Left foot on rear peg. When you clutch, pull the bars just a little and put pressure on the left rear peg.

Re: Clutching Second......

No, Iam just saying that I can ride wheelies with the 4 wheeler at balance point...I am not just talking crap.

I am trying to bring my 954 up at around 40mph in second by using the clutch only. I can bounce it up no problem with just the throttle, but wanted to learn how to use the clutch. Just amazes me that I have no problem on the 4 wheeler but can't do it with the 954.

Do you let the clutch out fast, or slow? How many RPM do you overrev the bike before you begin to release the clutch?

Re: Clutching Second......

Fast and smooth on the clutch. Get going about 40-50 in second. Pull in the clutch, then give it some gas and let the clutch out smooth and fast. All this should take less than a second. Just keep giving it more gas until it comes up. Try lowering your tire pressure some if you havent already, should help a bit with traction. Make sure you are keeping your weight as far back as you can too.

Re: Clutching Second......

I was having kinda the same problem with my 750 after I went from 1st gear wheelies to all 2nd gear wheelies, I just couldn't get it up high. Turns out I was so used to letting off the gas real quick from 1st gear coming up fast that I was letting off the gas like I was going to balance it out WAY too early, so it wouldn't go high.
I'd give it more revs and stay at like 3/4 throttle and it will come up easy, bouncing aways helps but it's probably not necessary

Re: Clutching Second......

If your rear is spinning you're putting to much weight over the front and need a new rear, i take it you're doing this sitting not standing? Loosen up a little bit and put more of your weight back, basically take more of your weight off the handlebars. Don't even worry about bouncing. Most likely if it's popping up 2 inches and boggin down then you're not giving it enough throttle, not rpms, throttle.

Re: Clutching Second......

As a fellow 954 rider(with stock gears) you should have absolutely no trouble in second. If you are approaching 40 to 50 mph in second you should be able to just quickly one finger blip the clutch lever in(and release of course) and it will come right up...and he is right.. if you spinnin in second..you need to lean back...and get that tire warmed up for cryin out loud. but thats just my

Re: Clutching Second......

whenever the rear spins for me it is either because i'm not leaning back far enough or my tire is still cold

Re: Clutching Second......

I have to get out and practice some more.....I guess the Biggest problem is that the bike seems to just lurch forward and not raise the front end 90% of the time.......

I think its because I am not giving it enough RPM and throttle....what do you think?

Thanks for the all the replies....................

When I first got the 954 I did the same thing.....I was coming off a 600 and thought I would need alot less throttle with a bigger bike. I was suprised to find out that you still have to rev it up to 9 or 10k and hold the throttle about half way open until she comes up. My guess is that your revving it up to 9k with a blip and when you let the clutch out....you're backing off on the gas. Try holding the throttle open half way from 20mph and when it gets to 40mph....slip the clutch in and let the revs build for a half a second and dump. Make sure you keep that throttle hand locked. It should come up at least two feet or more. Be smooth on the throttle.....roll it on and hold it in one spot. If your revving it up by blip blip blip.....it's gonna be choppy and lunge foward on you. You'll end up doing two inch power wheelies at best. Good luck and cover the back brake....it'll save your *** some day.
