Getting used to the rear handbrake - newbie
Getting used to the rear handbrake - newbie
I recently bought James' (xratedfreestyle) '05 636 and carried it back to MN, and now I'm trying to figure this stunting **** out. On the R1, I'd dip the clutch with my middle finger just a bit, and brake control would come from the foot brake. I've never used a rear handbrake before. On this, the clutch lever is too short so I have to use my index finger on the clutch.. but then how do you have any brake control? Do you hold the left grip with your two weak little useless fingers and use the middle finger to cover the rear handbrake? I feel like I'm gonna fly off the back.
Pointers?
Getting used to going 30 in first instead of 85 is a bit different, too..

Sounds like you dont even need to be touching the hand brake. Just learn your foot brake 1st.
When you do make it to where u are using your HB, clutch it up w/ your index finger then slide it to the HB untill your ready for stalls and such...then u will being using index on the clutch and middle on the HB.

There are a few people that use the hand brake on the bottom you could always switch if your used to clutching with your middle finger.? yeah only two fingers on the bar, one finger on the clutch and one finger on the brake.

Come on guys, no need to be rude.. this is a hell of a difference from what I'm used to.
Thanks to those who replied to the topic, I do appreciate it.. I know it's a newbie question. Looks like I'll just say **** the hand brake for now until I get used to the rest of the bike.. baby steps.
It's not like I've never ridden a wheelie before. They're just a HELL of a lot different at 10-20 mph. I thought first gear on the R1 was too touchy; I did them in second or third.

get slow wheelies and foot brake control down before you mess w/ the HB. When you are ready for the Hb i found it easy to learn in seat stander, or you could do staggered and still cover the footbrake but practice using the hand brake

i'm goin through the same sh*t man, learnin slow stuff is harder then the fast stuff, my gixxer 1k and the 954 had ooodles of noodles power for I-95 second gear wheelies, but now on the F4izzle tryin to pick it up at 0-5mph is completly different, good luck man.
