Disc brake pads are too close

My front disc brakes just keep squeaking cause the disc is touching the pads. I don't know how to separate the pads a little more. They're way to close together. I've already run a few searches in Google, but found nothing. Maybe another one of you 150 riders here can lend me some specific help. But any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Disc brake pads are too close

they are soposed to be close, try spraying some brake cleaner on them, or take some fine sand paper to the disk to de-glaze it a bit

good luck

Re: Disc brake pads are too close

I'll try that.

But are they supposed to be touching the disc?

dude i'm pretty sure that there will always be some very slight contact even when brakes arnt applied. but if they are dragging more than normal, mabey check your piston or slide bolts? also check your brake fluid if its old and possably boiled. hope this helps bro

yeah they will be touching always but liftit up and se if the wheel spins pretty free, if it does just clean all your dust away and your good, if not then you either got a caliper sticking or the slides are sticking or a bent rotor

Disc brakes by design will always have some drag on them. Some drag racers run drum brakes and set them up so there is no drag like there is with disc brakes. Tony D and AC faris at one time used to use a screw driver to open up the pads so they don't drag and the front wheel spun freely. One you hit the brakes you have to open them back up with a screw driver. One thing to remember is that afer opening up the pads the brakes take a few pumps of the lever to work. At stunt wars a few years back Tony forgot that and almost took out a concrete barrier.

Thanks for the tips! My brake pads are fine, I guess it's just that I have to clean the system.

2005?

How often do you ride in the dirt, and how often do you clean it?

a bike that new shouldn't have stuck calipers, or bad fluid...

Hell my 1995 fzr's brakes were fine, still from the factory never touched! Only had to rebuild the rear caliper, but the front was fine.. and thats after 10 years

Re: Disc brake pads are too close

That's probably what it is. All the dirt and mud pwned my brake system, and now I'm noticing. I'll just clean it, cause for the recent few months I haven't touched dirt. All street and lots now.
