How to learn wheelies proper way?

I own a 04 R1 -1 in the front which I ride everyday. I'm in the market to buy a ttr 125 so I can actually learn to do them properly. Is it true its best to start out on a 125 then hop on your bike. To learn clutching and balance points?

Thanks

tips and avice
