Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
Hey peeps!
i'm new to stunting but have been ridin bout 5 years!
Before you decide to flame me i've read as much as i can find about wheelies! but haven't found the answer to my question!
Basically i ride a zx6r j2 (quite a big bike for a 600 but im 6"2 so it suits me) i live in london in the uk, started off with power wheelies (not a good idea - well scary) read up some more & got used to clutching it up!
Now my question is once up in 1st i can manage about 10 - 20 meters! so not anywhere near bp, problem is when i clutch it i still tend to chop the throttle as i'm not sure if its still climbing & will continue til i flip, but i'm getting used to it and now tend to just hold the throttle at the same place it was when i clutched it on the not so high ones (bike just glides along & sets down nice)
I now want to go further so do i apply more power midway through the wheelie to keep it going (in 1st which is a little bit twitchy) or do i brave it when it comes up really high & hold throttle there! (either way do i need to apply more power during the wheelie)
I really want to be able to go further before i start getting into bp discussions & i do practice as much as i can but there aint things like lots anywhere! near me just a couple of quiet streets (po-po love stopping bikes round here & it aint so easy to run in london)
P.S. i use the back brake alot in my riding so i'm not bothered about stamping on it if needed!
Cheers guys & sorry for the long post!
Que the look at the search button comments etc..
(bloody squids we :YEAH )

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
well, cover the brake. you don't need it til you're behind or at BP. stop lumberjacking the throttle (takes time to do that). some people say lock your wrist but I don't....use the throttle as necessary. bring it back farther with more throttle and when you're back, you can let off. you'll get it....it takes time.
Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
Thanks KF Chris
Couple of questions you said to (stop lumberjacking! it takes time to do that!) I take it you mean chopping the throttle (or snapping the throttle shut) is that something i will have to learn in the future (as i thought it was a bad thing full stop).
also you said that some people lock their wrist (whats that all about?)
is that something i can do to keep the wheel up or is that a bp only thing?
i'm still using 1st as 2nd on this bike won't come up (well i cant get it up in 2nd anyway) so everything happens real fast in my eyes!
i really want to feed more power in whilst in the wheelie but because its in 1st i fear that i won't catch it in time if it goes to high as it is a twitchy gear!
i have tried standing both staggered and with both feet on front pegs but it seems like the bike wants to spit me off when clutching so i'm sticking with sitdowns til ive got them on lockdown
thanks again guys
any advice is really appreicated

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
make sure you're body english is right, it's hard eo explain...but it just feels right a certain way. check out some of the vids on this site or uponone.com and you can see how it's better some ways. keep your arms extended, but not locked out (yet) so you can transfer some weight back on your feet, that will make it feel stable.
lumberjacking is when you're not smooth on the throttle. constantly changing throttle inputs makes the bike squirelly and it will wobble later on when you're a little better because of that too (unless you're Kane....who's a pro lumberjack sometimes I've heard)
you'll get used to standing staggered, it's a different feeling but so are long BP wheelies....just something you have to get used to.
that bike will probably come up in 3rd, but you can get to that later. working in 1st will help you learn throttle control.
locking the wrist. people do that when they're in BP to keep it steady. I personally think that's not the best way to get control and keep the bike steady, but that's my opinion.

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
go with staggered and stick with that.
you just need to learn to roll off the throttle in sync with how much the front rises. when the bike gets up to a point or at a rate you're not used to or comfortable with, you start to panic and close the throttle too much. you just need to get comfortable with the wheel coming up and being up there, and roll off the appropriate amount. it just takes time.
stick with staggered, and give a good bounce as you clutch to get the bike going up, so it's not just wanting to shoot forward

just a few more things i want to know! aint got anybody over here to ask so i'm kinda relying on you guys for help.
For stand ups should i start standing or seated & stand once up in the wheelie? (tried already standing)
is there a certain way that i should position my body for stands ups / do i need to grip the tank or bike with my legs? as the bike seems to want to leave me behind when i launch the wheelie (feel like i'm being seperated from the bike in midair - and not in proper control of the bike)
also i have a fairly stiff suspension setup on my bike as i ride around 150-200 miles a week (i ride everywhere around london including commuting to work as well as play) so i need my bike to handle well.
but this makes it very hard for me to bounce the bike up (i think im surposed to almost jump on the pegs and wait for the bike to return but i dont get much give from the shocks) so is there another way to help the bike come up as bouncing doesn't really work for me (i could just be doing it wrong)
thanks again guys

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
stiff suspension is great for stunting
you want to already be standing up staggered when you bounce/rev/clutch
you don't really need to jump, but you do need to compress the suspension. if you just stand perfectly still and clutch it it's going to want to shoot forward more instead of come up easy. a little bounce and a little gas is all it takes if you time it right with the clutch. it's all about timing.
learn to use the back brake

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
Cheers guys!
will definitely try some more stand ups again tonight! & let you know how it went!
if anybody else has some pointers than might help with my sitdowns/stand ups don't hold back i'm eager to learn!
what is the best technique for bouncing the bike up for 2nd gear sitdowns, i'm sure i need to bounce it in 2nd as i can't get it to come up with just the clutch (i want to try getting it up in 2nd as i think i will have more luck keeping it up for longer as it wont be such a twitchy gear)
i would still like to get the sitdowns locked as over here we dont have great big long stretches of highway to really rock proper stand ups!
but sitdowns can work in most situations (especially when leaving the lights as i always get kids giving me the wheelie sign - must get that 3-4 times a day)
thanks again peeps
Oh Yeah
this site rocks!:YEAH

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
THIS CONTRADICTS THIS
Let me get this straight, you don't know how to wheelie, yet you pulling up pow pow sitdowns in traffic for kids?!?!?!
That's extremely squidly man. practice 1st gear staggered in an empty parking lot or road. they are way easier to balance and bring behind bp and slow down. trust me. I don't wheelie for anyone without *****. If people give me the international wheelie sign(like the paper sign in paper, rock, scissors, and then tilted back with the fingers pointed up at a 45* angle), I make a gesture like I'm lifting up my shirt to show ***** if there's a female in the car. otherwise I just ignore them.

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
I think you read my last post wrong mate!
I am clutching my wheelies!
stopped pow pows almost as soon as i started they aint safe!
I stated that i wanted to get advice on how to get a good bounce up in 2nd as i can't clutch up in 2nd! (i can clutch up 1st all day - they aint all consistant but i can get it up! - but like i said i'm only going about 10 -20 meters at the moment and want to go further)
Wanted to try 2nd gear clutches as i know 2nd is a smoother gear (i am sure you know this too)
I find 1st twitchy/snappy what ever you want to call it (and i think that is why i chop the throttle shut as it can rise too fast with just a little input from me - maybe i'm not smooth enough yet but i'm finding it hard to get smoother with the throttle at the moment as the same thing happens while practicing - so i thought 2nd might be a better option - sorry if i didn't make that clear)
I never said anything about pow pows in traffic (sorry mate but you made that up yourself) as our roads are way smaller/narrower than yours! and just getting to work some days i take my life in my hands with some of the drivers on our roads
i would only try a wheelie where it is safe! i.e. certain stretches of road or junctions (if you have been to london you will know what i mean)
We have the odd supermarket car park but even some of these have security at night or local residents who are more than happy to call the police! (so lots are not a real option for me! - i wish we had the same kinda places as you then i could practice all day long)
and like i said i want to get sitdowns locked, so i thought if i could get better/further using 2nd it will give better knowledge of wheelies which i could then use in my 1st gear wheelies (and stand ups really are only for motorways/highways over here - & i cant really practice them properly till i feel more confident in the rest of my game)
sorry for the confusion!
just wanted some advice
cheers guys

Re: Do I Increase power or hold neutral throttle
you don't want to listen to the advice we give though....stick with staggered in first gear...forget about sitdowns till you have those.
even if you clutch it up, if you're having to apply more power during the wheelie, it's a power wheelie.
