How should I attempt 1st wheelie? Clutch or power?

What is usually the best method to attempt your 1st wheelie? I have an 03 R6, and as many of you may know, the low end is nothing to brag about. Is it just me, or does this bike need to be reved up pretty damn high in order to achieve a power up wheelie?

Is the clutch method not recommended for a newbie? I see a lot of people stating that they started with a power. I think the idea of a clutch appeals to me because of the lower speeds required.

Re: How should I attempt 1st wheelie? Clutch or power?

start with power wheelie.. just get the front a couple of inches of the ground to get a feel for the bike.... then get higher as you feel more comfortable... soon you should be powerin 2 second gear wheelies with no problem... if you start with clutchin it in 1st gear you will loop the bike without a 12 bar .... clutching a 1st gear wheelie is way harder on you and the bike. Also any jack *** can do a power wheelie, nothing to it, just lean back.... and get over the fear of falling backwards.

believe me right now im learning to rock a wheelie on the BP in 1st gear.. way harder then powering in 2nd.... i couldnt count the number of times my 12 bar saved the bike tryin slow wheelies.

Have any tips for the r6? What RPM should I begin this at? 6k? I assume I would rev to 6k, let off throttle all the way and crack it back open full throttle?

Re: How should I attempt 1st wheelie? Clutch or power?

i have a 2004 R6... i will check next time i do a power wheelie. i forget.. im think 6 to 8k... it will come up easy..... i hate to send you to another site.. but this post on this website helped me alot... adam is rocking a R6 on the video also(i think).... http://www.dallasriders.com/viewtopic.php?t=4538

you dont have to start sitting down either... just do what feels better... i wouldnt suggest the staggered footing though... keep both feet on your foot pegs(not the passenger pegs) and sqaure up no matter what position your in.

I'd appreciate it a lot. Ive read writeups by other people, but they have always been on other bikes. I am leary to test suggestions from others, as each bike differs from one to another. If I at leat knew the RPM I should be riding the bike at before I punch the thottle, that would be perfect. Also, when I power back up, I assume this is full throttle?

go to r6messagenet.com for good write-ups. I too got an 04 R6 and on stock gearing I was able to power it up from 4k - whatever in 1st. just be careful around 7k - 8k because that's when the power band kicks in.

Re: How should I attempt 1st wheelie? Clutch or power?

get comfortable doin this and that.. i tried powering up a wheelie and almost ended up on my ***.. front came up a few inches i have a 600cc f4 cbr and when the tire touched the ground again. i got naaasty headhsake. not a good feling i let off the gas and managed somehow to get out of it.
F U K powerwheelies dont do em unless youre on a liter bike or something. power wheelies are not for 600's.

just gotta man up and clutch it up one time.
i did it once on accident and it came up faaast. just gotta practice i've only been riding for a month or two and not every day either. cant ride everyday.

exactly... and yeah, that's all we need, is more new riders running around with 12 bars when they can't do a fvckin wheelie yet... ppl need to get back to old school ways.. there is no EASY solution to learning.. just spend time on your bike and keep practicing.. learn daily.. and for the last time.. this goes to everyone YOU DON"T NEED GEARING!!!!!! i say get gearing when it's time for circles.. and that's it

Re: How should I attempt 1st wheelie? Clutch or power?

yo when i come up to fast in a 1st gear clutch wheelie, the bike slams the 12 bar baounces back then just goes right back down to two wheels. i just step off, and sometimes i can run and save it before the bike slids to the pavement. im getting pretty good at it, if i didnt have a 12 bar the black light would be broke and the bike would land on top of its self almost weekly.

not needed for circles either, just need to play with throttle little more, and use the clutch more often not to stall it...but of course gearing makes it easier for technical/idle stuff so I guess it's reasonable, but when learning to wheelie not that it won't make it any easier, but it will actually make it harder...ppl just don't get it...
