Out of all of this....take baby steps, please please learn them slow, and consicously check your rear brake before you do a wheelie, and do this everytime. It will get you in the habit of knowing that it will only save you, and when you do "actually go past the BP" you will use it to bring it back down.

I haven't mastered bp myself yet, but from reading many posts it's a weightless feeling along with using less rpms. I've also read that a good way to know is when your forks point straight out.
