Ak-47
Re: Ak-47
jdridin There are a lot of common misconceptions thrown at you in this thread. For all practical application in these assault rifles, percieve there to be no difference between the 7.62mm and the .308
PimPus Maximus, the .223 is a great VERY HIGH velocity round. It does not have near the take down power, but lets be honest, you're correct it will take a guy down, but 600yards is a HUGE stretch. Not bragging, but i just recieved an expert shooting award from a One Star General in Fort Knox this summer in the M16/M4 class, and i cannot NEARLY say i can hit a 600yard shot. Shooting isn't the weapon, the round, or even the trigger pull, but more on the knowledge of the weapon and shooting in general. The .223/5.56mm IS NOT a long range round, and if you're looking for something within the 300meter range like you said referring to taking the AK, i'd say for all practical application, take the .223/5.56, because it's better tactically for urban assault/clearing rooms and kicking in door type ****.
I agree with Joe Brown- if you go AK, go Polytech Legend.
If you have money for the DPMS, go for it. It's pretty much the civilian SR-25, which is the long range weapons system adopted by the U.S. Navy. Not quite the barrell, but adequate no doubt.
TEVA- love the collection, us Louisiana boys do well.
For an overall, price, tactical proficiency, weight, round capacity, take down power, range and urban ability, go with the .223, in which a good model would be a Colt or Bushmaster.
Oh, i forgot, and if you can afford it, which is about 2x as much at around $2000, go for a piston instead of gas operated .223

Re: Ak-47
Sweet AK bro! Love the picatinny rails on front and rear like that. I'm trying to get a railed cover (the co-witness rail) from Kreb's, freaking 275.00, but it the kat's ***...
Re: Ak-47
I wish. That's a cheap *** scope, but i put that thing through hell, so that's what i wanted. My nice scope goes on the Sako TRG-42. I never to any tactical **** with my AR, so i just put a crosshairs scope on there to target shoot and stuff. $59 compared to $1200, you get what you pay for but that scope has been badass for $59. The AKOG goes on my service rifle at the base.

Congrats, Im not bragging either but I havent had anything but expert badges on my blues and have a 0933 'Combat Marksmanship coach' MOS. Dunno how the army rolls but to get that expert badge you pretty much HAVE to hit 500 yds.
And still stand by what I said. 556/223 is one of the most accurate rounds at 1000 yards. Take down power is greatly diminished, but still one of the most accurate and precise rounds. Keep in mind nato rounds that us military shoot out of beat up m16 a2's and a4's arent going to be as accurate as match grade weapons and rounds, or high end weapons or rounds.
Re: Ak-47
Oh and yea, 556 for urban clearing? Might wanna look into ballistics and collateral damage. Theres this thing called overpenetration, and its commonly associated with 556. Its all fine and dandy for the streets of fallujah or ramadi, but in the US the person you might hit in the next room could be your gf, daugher, son etc.
Oh and no offense dude, but your using a bipod fully extended on flat ground, with your hand extended out to the forgrip, and judging by how the weapon is almost parallel to the ground your shooting over a flat expanse of land. You should know if your an expert shot that sucking yourself as low to the ground as possible, and using bone support provides the best position. Your holding your upper torso up in that picture using almost all muscle support. Ya got the bipod out mays well use it right. Might hit that 600 yd mark if ya change up a bit..
Just sayin.

. But as for hitting a target at 100meters or yards with the .223/556, that's not happening. A well placed round at that distance is 90% shooter, but for the 10% round, a .308, .300 win mag, .338 lapua, .416, .408, or .50 cal, all needing a heavy barreled weapon to fire accurately is almost the only way to go. A .223 hitting a man sized target without spraying 30 rounds out of a non-heavy barrelled assauly rifle, simply not happening at all. The final sniper qualifications are using .308 round fired out of a M24(Army) M40(Marine) which is a heavy barreled Remington 700 with trigger tweakage and 10x fixed zoom optics to hit a 1000meter target. That was a 100 meter shot at about a 10 degree downhill angle..Torso MUST be up a bit to hit a downward angle shot, i should have set the bipod lower, and anything over 200meters, i'm putting my left hand under the buttstock for true support.....i'm not missing that 100meter more than 1/2 inch. I can hit a man sized target at 500-550, but that round is not accurate after those distances.
Just sayin.

Re: Ak-47
dude im not sayin the .223 is ideal for going to the 1k range especially when you got .308 and the other shoulder thumpers. But your trien to tell me that its not accurate ast 600. Might want to look into match shooting. Ive seen targets with 5" groups at 1k out of a .223. Granted its out of a sick rifle with a load thats been finetuned, but to say its not accurate or capable at 1000 is flatout wrong, and to say its not good past 600 is WAY wrong. Like I said stop confusing shooting these shitty *** military weapons to weapons you can tweak.

Re: Ak-47
annnnnnnnnnnnnd sorry if Im nitpicking but a sporter barrel can do everything a bullbarrel can, just not as fast
Dunno if ya picked up on it, but Im a marine so I like to argue especially when it comes to shooting.
