home defense

Ok, my guns are NOT for home defense, however I'm not afraid to use them if need be. Question at hand is if someone were to break into your house, and you had a boltaction scoped .22, and an AK47 in the 7.62x39, which would you spring for?

I'm thinking if the intruder were upstairs I would go for the .22, even though it's tighter quarters, just because of the fear of over pentration/missing unless I were alone, then it'd be the AK... However downstairs I think I would go for the AK for obvious reasons.

What's your opinions?

Re: home defense

the .22 has **** for stopping power. that Ak Would be a good choice as long as your a half decent shot. otherwise be prepared to fist it out with a pissed off burgler if you shoot em with the .22. Same as getting stabbed with a knife shorter than 2". I'd be more pissed than anything

Yea, I'm broke as a joke though. I'd love to get a shotty of sorts (870) but right now the money situation isn't in my favor, lol.

Re: home defense

Yeaa, I'm lookin' for a cheap breach loading double barrel (not the O/U) to chop off most of the barrel for fun, and home defense. My friend has one and it's such a cool little gun, plus a sawed off is pretty damn intimidating, haha.

I have 3 'scary dogs.' Thats not the point. Re-read and notice how I said I don't have my guns for homedefense, but if it came down to it I wouldn't be afraid to use them.

Re: home defense

i wouldn't use the 7.62, but i also dont think i would use the .22. That 7.62X39 has got some power and likes to rip through a lot of stuff. I would only use my AK if absolutely necessary, but in that kind of panic situation you may not be thinking of whats behind your target. I would get a pistol of some sort. I just picket up a CZ 85 9mm that i would use for home defense. Im also looking to pick up a Smith 686 that would also be good, but a 7.62 rifle is too much for close quarter situations.

Re: home defense

im no expert but in tight areas with other family members in home honestly i would lean on the 22 simply for reasons of deadly accurate and less likely to go traveling through intruders body thru the wall behind them and into family members. i read some where and have been told all my life that the 22 is the most deadly weapon in the world.
now this is due to the fact of the led never leaving the body, the shear range(1 1/2 miles on the out side of most of the boxes of shells)and how much this round like to bounce off of any solid object. Ive seen many x-rays of head shots by 22s and to say the least its not pretty. the bullet bounces around in there noggin like a supercharged ping pong ball in a Mason jar turning the on comers brain to complete soup. a friend in high school got shot from 10 feet face to face in his left collarbone and the bullet actually exited his right side hip rendering him in a screaming spasm twirling on the ground for 5 min before he passed out from the pain (says ems). none the less he was bed ridden for 2 months. so i guess if your a crack shot and worried about other family members use the 22 otherwise if unsure of your ability to make a sure shot under pressure use the ak47 but remember first shot with this will more than likely send family (dad) into a mad scramble for his own arms. fear can cuase amazingly stupid assumptions and even quicker actions without thinking. All in All gun of choice would be a shot gun pistole grip and sawed off for max spread this even with a bird shot will send any on-comer to the floor in a instant. add 00 buck and your talk-in removing some limbs.

.22 is a weak round meant for squirels and maybe racoons but nothing much bigger than that. You are probobly thinking of .223 being the deadliest round. This is the round commonly found in the M-16/AR-15 rifles and the projectile is about the same size as the regular .22 but with a sh*t load more powder behind it. I agree with the general consensus here, for home defense get a 12 gauge, used pump-action Mossberg 500s can be had for around $150 as there are plenty of them around. Mine was police surplus. If you have to use what you got get 7.62 hollow-points and make sure you don't miss or use the .22 but it better hold a lot of rounds and be semi-automatic.

Re: home defense

Here's my

I would go with the .22, More people die a year from .22 than any other gun!

If you want to use the AK, get some good PD ammo from Extreme Shock, they make a frangible that turns to powder if it hits a wall or door, but leaves a GAPING hole in flesh!

Personally, I keep a remington 12ga next to the bed loaded with 000 frangible buckshot from Fiocchi first 5 rds and the next 3 are frangible slugs for that extra umph, and always one of handguns with Winchester Ranger SXT bonded HP's for the wife.

Yes you ALWAYS have to worry about a miss, If you have a gun that is just for HD, Buy yourself a tailored round, I recommend a Frangible round from Fiocchi, Federal makes a EFMJ, or Extreme shock AFR. All these will do MASSIVE damage to a would be assailent, but walls, doors, and other obstructions will stop them and put them into non-lethal states.

Re: home defense

Use the AK and use a round with a high expansion rate, they wont over penetrate.

seriously, i dont see how people are saying a 22 will just make someone angry. 3 to the chest and one to the head with a 22 will take anyone out.
