raptor compression release valve?

hey, im havin trouble gettin my raptor to start. it acts like the starter doesnt have enough power to turn the engine over. it will turn over till it hits the compression stroke then it stops. does anyone know if there is a compression release on these machines, and if so, were do i look to find it? thanks in advance for the help guys. peace yall

Re: raptor compression release valve?

well i think the starter is good. it will spin it till it hits the compression. then its like it doesnt have the power to crank it past the compression. thats why i was wondering if it has a compression release. thanks though, ill definately check it out again. peace

Re: raptor compression release valve?

Actually it's the '01 that has all the tranny problems. They also have issues with the one way bearing going out, if you don't start it in neutral all the time. If you replace it, go with L & A Design.

But I have to ask, are you sure it's the starter? To me it sounds like you either fouled the plug or your battery is almost dead.
Do you have any mods done to it? If so, what's your jetting?

Re: raptor compression release valve?

how would a fouled plug keep it from turning over?
Never mind, I didn't read the post right.

Re: raptor compression release valve?

actually, we've been pullin it with the truck. alot easier. and if it was a fouled plug, the engine would turn over it just wouldnt fire. and the battery is fine, its brand new, and i use it on my bike when im not runnin the raptor. and its an 01, and ive already had problems with the one way bearing, aka starting clutch. i dont know exactly what mods are on it, i bought it used back in june and have barely been able to ride it. anyway, the starter turns the engine till it hits the compression stroke, then it doesnt have the power to continue turning it over. so i figured it was either the starter had gone bad, or it has aftermarket piston or big bore kit and has too much compression for the starter, or it may be stock and have a compression release valve that has gone bad therefore causing too much compression for the starter to continue turning the engine over. oh well, ill figure something out. peace yall

Re: raptor compression release valve?

There's a couple other things you might want to check. They seem like simple things, but they can happen.

Check the carb to make sure it didn't separate from the boot. It will pull start if it's separated, but won't start normally. This happened on my craptor several times.

Check the CDI to make sure all the connections are secure. This happened on my yfz, and I ended up tearing the carb apart only to find it was a loose connection in the CDI.

But as you said, it could also be your valves or a compression problem.

If you need a repair manual, let me know and I can send you the zipped file.
Good luck!

Re: raptor compression release valve?

My buddy has a Raptor and his one way bearing that turns over the engine slips, replaces it 3 times a summer, so it's probably that, 'cuz what you described always happens to him.

Re: raptor compression release valve?

ok, let me explain the problem again. the starting clutch/one way bearing is fine. when the engine reaches the compression stroke while trying to start, it acts like the starter does not have the power to continue turning the engine over. the bearings are not slipping, and the battery is not dead. the starter doesnt have the power to get past the compression stroke. thats why i was wondering if there was a compression release on these engines. i now have a manual, so thanks everyone for your comments, the help is greatly appreciated. peace out

Re: raptor compression release valve?

OP: i know this is a hella old thread.... But reading it I'm having the exact same problem and apparently no one else here has or they wouldn't be saying all that off the wall spark plug battery starter transmission carburetor nonsense LOL. I've never seen someone have to describe something so simple so many times.

Anyhow ... Did you ever figure anything out with this problem? I love to jump straight to the source so the problem and not play that usual throwing parts at it game!
