Wheelie riding aide...
Wheelie riding aide...
Well I'm new to quad riding, or well riding in general and I have yet to even learn to ride a wheelie, which of course is the key to all ground stunts except stoppies pretty much. But I'm not one for pain, so looping a quad while learning doesn't sound to appealing to me. I've decided to try and make a "wheelie-bar" to keep the quad from flipping if it goes back too far. It would just be like a wheelie bar on a car or drag bike, but be higher off the ground w/ probably a larger rubber tire to allow it to be used on dirt. My question is, has anyone ever done this before or seen it done, at least something similar? I got the idea when a buddy said get a 6 pack rack to keep it from going over further, but i figured i could make something that's adjustable so I can get it up in stages. TIA for the input.

well your quad has a grab bar right so you probobly wont loop it on flat gound. so just practice in a flat place. If you do go too far you will just 12 it but it is pretty scary i guess if your learning.
What kind of wheelies do you want to ride sit downs or standup?

Re: Wheelie riding aide...
No need for a wheelie bar man, just get out on some flat ground, soft grass, and 12 it a few times. you will get the hang of it. Put one foot on the grab bar, that will help you get it up.

If your rear brake is working fine, there is no need for a wheelie bar. You need to learn how and when to use the rear brake to bring the front end back down if you go too far.

Re: Wheelie riding aide...
Thanks for all the help guys. Bad news though, my quad doesn't have back brakes at the moment but i did receive the master cylinder i need today, so tomorrow will a good day hopefully. And if by 12, you mean standing it up on the grab bar, I've done that once and fell off. It didn't hurt at all because I wasn't moving but I can't imagine getting scraped up while moving. The 12 i did do was while I was being stupid trying to climb a car that had been crushed by some 4 wheel drives. But as far as doing it on soft grass that's flat, there's a big problem. We don't have any fields that are accessible by me. The only place that is even an option is at our local drag strip, which has about 10 acres of grass but its pretty bumpy. I don't wanna get crossed up hitting a bump on the back wheels. I want to try and learn both stand up and sit down wheelies. I tried putting one foot on the grab bar going across our asphalt parking lot, but it's real short and for some reason I still get scared thinking it's gonna go over even though I'll be standing straight up. I guess it just takes time.

Haha. shoot I can't wait till i have your skills. I did find a good place to practice but very small and right next to a 4 lane road, but it is right in front of our business so getting there is no problem. I changed the rear master cylinder and found out that the rear caliper needed to be rebuilt, so it's going on in the morning so hopefully I can practice a controlled wheelie.

What kind of quad do you have? I learned wheelies on my z250 in about 5min in the street in front of my house. I just put a foot in the grab bar, if it goes to far back the quad just parks itself and your already standing so ya just step off. You'll pick it up quick, quads are easy to stunt.

I have a warrior. From what I've heard from one source, warriors are well balanced over the front and rear tires (also from experience), but 400ex's are very light on the front. Is this true, and would this make them a lot easier to stunt?

If you have a 2004, yes. Your grab bar can be removed and replaced.

Get a sixxer rack, it will go out another 5-7 inches farther than the stock grab bar, Mines saved my *** more than once hauling azz on the pavement. A couple more times and the damn thing wont even hold my cooler full of brewskees anymore

Re: Wheelie riding aide...
get rid of any long "wheelie" bar u have on yer quad............. trust me been there done that i run one about 2 inches off the back plastics........the long ones will bend some.........problem is as u come up fast (when yer learnin) with the long bar u hit it sooner and alot harder that long bar then in turn has more leverage and will snap when u least expect it thus not giving u the "safety" factor u are lookin for in a bar.............besides that just learn the rear brake..........i actually have the rear brake pedal pushed about halfway down (when im takin off from a dead stop to do slow wheelies) before i even clutch it up!
