It may not be about being cool, sometimes it's like racism...it trickles down from learned behavior. Some people vote a certain party because their family does.

edit: I agree with scott, too much control for one party is never good. When the parties are in a balance it takes more for one side or the other to vote against party. Unfortunately lobbyists keep the pendulum swinging to one side or another because money talks.
