Smile Stand-Ups

I started doing them on the rear pegs. Now I have to work on the balance point = height = distance.

Enjoy...

Looking good SPINE...

Today I stood on my seat but I was still crouched (no hands). Just haven't stood up yet. Any tips.

Here is a stand-up I did today.

Thumbs up Andy B...

Hey that's an awesome picture! I am working on getting a nice shot with the Chicago skyline in the back. I saw the other stand-up you posted and that was nice too.

Well here's how I came to stand up on the seat. I too was standing up on the seat and crouching with my knees on the tank and spreading my arms. It felt funny because I felt like a wuss.

Then finally this past sunday I stood on the seat then stood up! Well as soon as I spread my arms I quickly came back down, bringing my chest to the tank, it's funny I got that on video. Well when I came down I thought about it and then I knew I could do it. Kinda like when you learn to ride a bicycle and you are swerving so the next time you know how to compensate.

I knew how it felt from the first time so the next time I stood up not too nervous and then spread my arms. It felt awesome! I thought in my head ok this isn't too bad.

The only thing I messed up on was keeping the bike in gear. I would speed up and kick it into 3rd. What I should of done was shift into NEUTRAL. This way I won't lose speed as fast as being in gear and it will just feel better, it should help on the balance and just being smooth.

I'm just a beginner but this is just what I think and how I do it.

I only did it twice then we, my wife was filming, went home because I wasn't feeling confident that day.

Take care!

Hi Spine,

Thanks for the tips. I will be trying it on a long downhill in neutral.

Regarding the stand-up on Lake Shore Drive (LSD) in front of Chicagos's skyline... that is going to be awsome.

I was in Chicago 3 weeks ago for a mini vacation. You have a real nice town there!

I took this picture on top of the Ferris Wheel on the Navy Pier.

That picture was taken by a standard digital camera. It is a panoramic. I took several pictures and stitched them together.

I use a Canon Powershot G3.

Click on panoramics below to view full size. All from Chicago.

RE:

SPINE, what gear were you in during that stand up? Also, were both feet on the passenger pegs, or did you have your right foot covering the rear brake? I always wondered, can standups be done in first gear then while in the air, switch to 2nd gear??

Well here's the deal: in the picture I was in first gear with both feet on the rear pegs, it comes up pretty easy. I just slightly bounce it and up we go! To me it is too easy because I can do them standing on the front pegs but this day I was trying them on the rear pegs.

If I have one leg on the rear peg and the right leg covering the brake they are still pretty easy but at first they feel unstable. You just have to try them over, and over, and over again to get use to the feel of being in flight.

I can't shift into second yet but when I do try that most likely I will be doing them standing from the front pegs. I know you are suppose to cover the rear brake but I feel comfortable enough not to cover it, I just easy off the gas and if I need to I throw my weight forward if I am going up to high.

Like I said before:

I'm just a beginner but this is just what I think and how I do it.

Hope this helps!

RE:

Thats cool. I can rip first gear wheelies all day sitting down..never really tried them standing up. I was thinking of trying them standing up and then switching into 2nd gear and riding it out. I just have to get over the feeling of standing and all that crap. Good job keep up the work.

Post bluzx6r

The first time I even attempted a stand-up this is how I did it. It's funny because it is the same way I got to standing on the seat.

Well I was going down a straight even road and I told myself "f**k it I'm going to do it!". So I stood up and did the wheelie just like I was doing the power wheelies sitting down. It came up and scared me like a beeyooch! But when I came down then I knew how to moderate the throttle to keep it up. So after that I would bring it up just enough, then I just read how some guys bounce it and it was even easier after that.

Basically you have to overcome that fear and the way I did it was by doing it that FIRST time and then you know how much throttle, brake, etc to give the bike. Hopefully this works for other stunts.

I guess the first time you do it, unless you flip or crash, will break you of the fear. And trust me, the excitement from accomplishing the stunt will help you perfect it.

The first time I tried was in second gear and I bounced it up. It was such a rush. I did a few of them one after the other. My heart was pounding so hard I could hardly catch my breath.
