Dammit borne
depends, you will need an mri and the consultation of a good orthopedic dr. find out who the team dr. for the red wings, tigers, or lions is and schedule an appointment there. dont waste time or money at the emergency room, bypass the middle man. good chance you will need surgery, dont believe the intertnet - if you could be a dr off the internet and diagnose yourself people wouldnt go to school for 8+ years.
call me if you need to

Re: Dammit..........
i've never had a torn acl.....but many stretched acl's.
they call it a hyper-extension......basically your need bends the wrong way too far and it stretches the tendons and shiat in there. i remember one time inparticular it felt like i broke my knee in half and it turned out to be a hyper extension......
from what i saw of your knee yesterday it seems to be more of a stretching than a tear. you know i've seen lots of those from racing moto x for years and it seems that when someone tears the acl they can't even walk, let alone ride. there's hope borne. i think your gonna be alright. call me later.

Went to an ortho place, had them check it out it was just a hyper-extension. They gave me crutches and vicodin and told me to stay off of it for 2 whole weeks otherwise it will heal up and feel "loose". I was riding the day after i could walk with no pain which was only about a week later.
But now it hurts sometimes. And it does feel somewhat "loose" compared to my good knee.
Follow doctors orders to the T. You'll thank yourself for it when you're 50 years old trying to ride fiddys with the grandkids!

That sucks borney! What happened bro?
There are many different levels of tear, some require the knife, some dont. If it makes you feel any better, i tore mine racing motocross when i was 18. I didn't go to the docs for a few weeks trying to "walk it off" but my leg would give out on me sometimes so i went to the docs finally. They MRIed me and told me there was a tear but it MIGHT be fixable with no surgery. I spent 6 months in physical theropy for it and only was off the bike for 2 months (was riding while still in theropy). Took a little over a year but it was full strength after that. Just do what you have to do to get it fixed and it'll be 100% in not too long.
You might want to consider a knee brace from someone like 661 or EVS. I wore EVS's after my injury and raced for 3 more years with no inidents and they dont really bother your movment too bad once you get used to them
Good luck with it bro!!!

Re: Dammit..........
My wife has a partial tear of the ACL. If it is an ACL your knee will just give out for no reason. The ACL is what controls your knee from hyper extending. The reason to get it looked at by an Ortho Dr He really the only Dr that will make the diagnosis of whether it is tore or not. Also if you let it go too long it can miss up other parts of your knee. The ER is USELESS they will x-ray it and say it looks good.
One thing to note is when you tear your ACL most every time the person will hear or feel a pop. As was the case with my wife’s knee. She did it making a sharp cut in soccer more less your body keeps going as your lower half of your leg tries to cut.
Most Drs will give you the choice of therapy or surgery I suggest if it is not a full tear to try therapy first. My wife is going through therapy and thus far it has gone well. Therapy does not fix the tear it strengthens and trains you to use the muscle around the knee to support it. In most cases you will still need to use a brace. The only to fix the tear is to have it replace which has a long recovery time that the length depends on whether they need to fix other things while they are in there. I have a few friends that had the surgery and they said the ACL in their cases was tore worse then the Dr thought it was in the MRI results.
R1Dude also has had this type of injury so maybe talk to him.
Shity injury for your sake i hope everything is good and it is just hyper extension of the knee. get well Bro..

Re: Dammit..........
I tore my acl about 6 years ago. Mild tear. When I intially tore it, it didnt hurt. I was playing football, sat on the bench after and said I was getting back in. I stood up and my knee gave out. Basically what they did was take another guys acl and insert parts into mine. I got orthascopic (sp), so my scar is not that bad. They gave me this long *** brace after, looked like robo cops leg, each week they set the brace a few inches so I could bend it more. I got the surgery in December and was up and going by Feb. One of the fastest recoveries they have seen. I pushed hard, since I was in high school and wanted to continue to play sports.
I have some problems with my leg, with squats... but nothing big. Its about 97% the same as before. I still stay active.
If you have any questions let me know..
