My thoughts on This or That
My thoughts on This or That
Show rider or competitor or both, I'd wanna be both but a better show rider.
What's the difference?
Competitor:
Perfect example: Ryan Cramer, he deiced to be competitor and at one time was the best on the planet at what he decided to do. Was he a good show rider? Nope. He was good enough at what he chose to concentrate on to get him where he wanted to be, on the cover of magazines, invited to major events over seas. Pay attention here. Why was he invited and made the magazines? Because he was the upper %5 at it.
Show Rider:
A rider that has a bunch of tricks, energy, style, and is exciting to watch. We all know a Christ gets more attention then circle wheelies, from the general public. Burnouts! A guy can rock a no handed Seat Stander but the crowd is looken at the guy standing on his gas tank and the guy doing the burnout.
Point?
Where do you wanna be? Where do you wanna go? What skills are gonna help you get there?
It's not about going out a practicing random tricks. Know where you wanna go, have a direction and practice accordingly.
Not everyone can be a great competitor; anyone that spends the time can be a great show rider. If we are a group of guys trying to go some where by putting on shows we owe it to the venues and the sport to do that.
Lots of skill in the local area, I'd sure like to see this new group or riders go some where.

very good points of interest
Re: My thoughts on This or That
A few stray thoughts.
Cramer last year started to practice other tricks and was a really good show rider, he was just an example prior to last season.
Trying to be both a good show rider and a great competitor is like buying an enduro, now you got a motorcylce that isn't really great at anything.

Re: My thoughts on This or That
Good thread starter and many valid points. The more I hang out with riders and go to shows, the more I see and realize. Schwartz you couldn't have said it better and I fully agree with ya.
As far as my riding style goes I'm leaning more into the competition side of things. Love doing any show period, but actual competition is what gets me going. Kinda gives me a goal to shoot for. If I know there's a comp coming up I'll work that much harder at trying to land this or that trick. I'll try harder to smooth out my style and riding ability. Shows are fun and all, but they don't really push me to get better. Hopefully pushing myself for the competion side will help me out in the show side.
I think the only way for the sport to actually grow into something respectable is through competitions. Sure shows are cool, but people will still view it as a bunch of hoodlums on bikes when they leave. If they actually watch an organized competition I think they take a little more respectable view point. Just my
....if they're even worth that much. What's everyone else think?
Definitely great thread Schwartz.....+1

Re: My thoughts on This or That
what about the rider who just rides because its a hobbie and likes doing tricks that makes him feel like he acomplished something in his life by learning it... were i fall in to this whole thing is having fun... shows get adrenaline pumping, and never been in a comp but im sure that does too but then at the end of the comp u get your label which on the other hand would also make u feel like u acomplished something/ or didnt.... so i would say im not ever gonna be the best nor is that my goal but to keep progressing and having fun do something that l love to do.....
also im a retard and my opinion is like an a$$hole "every body has one, and mine smeels like $hit"

As I had said, know where you want to go and practise or ride accordingly. If getting better does it for you and you don't want to compete then make for dam sure you keep it fun.
Ya got style Chris, a lot of riders don't. You are fun to watch. Once your depth of knowldge, or trick bags grows you're gonna be really good. IMO you're already good and fun to watch.
Borne:
I hope compititions pick up. Just being part of the XSBA times and watching it come and go makes me wonder about comps. Perhaps the XSBA was introduced to early in the sports development. Don't forget this though..

Re: My thoughts on This or That
I think you need to be good at both. Great/amazing at both would be sick! IF i had to pick which was MORE important, i would say show rinding, but again, BOTH are necessary.
I believe im a great (or close to it) show rider and a decent comp rider. definately there is much room for improvement on my cometition riding and im working towards that. but im also keeping my show riding on point and trying to improve on it cause right now that is what is getting it done for me.
Great topic schwartz! knowledge is spreading!
