Re: No Helmet Law
Personally I'd rather wear a helmet than not....U never know when some jackass is going to pull out in front of you, or some suv driving soccer mom is going to swerve into your lane while she's talking on her cellphone......those are things that you can't control, but you can at least minimize the amount of injury you will sustain by protecting your skull. I'd rather not be in a wheelchair....or be reduced to a drooling lump that needs 24 hour care to live...that's not living.
Re: No Helmet Law
Can't argue with freedom of choice.....don't get me wrong if someone wants to ride without a helmet that is their decision-except in MO we have a helmet law also-I'm saying that I'd never do it. You should have a choice...but that choice lands you in a wheelchair or turns you into a manchild that is your choice as well.......
be careful what you ask for..............

Re: No Helmet Law
the government and the state i think have enough control over everything we do i think eveyone should have that choice if they wish / why is it so bad taking this law away. there are many other states that do not have this law obviosly its not a major threat or every state would have it and wouldn't lift it and yes i will agree that there are idiots out there that are stupid enough as it is with a helmet on and shouldn't even be on a bike at all but usually when thats the case there going to get thier self hurt or even killed with or with out a helmet on personally i think i would be even more aware of my soroundings with out one onyou deffinetly have more sight of things around you anyway just my
Re: No Helmet Law
Choice is great.. But there are very few conditions I would go with no helmet.. woodward cruise.. gratiot cruise.. maybe tooling around stoney creek... and thats about it...
Ive seen enough helmets of people that have gone down to realize that they are an important part of riding.....
Otherwise, this law is natural selection at its finest.. I say implement it..

Helmet Law Bill Rides Past State Senate
Motorcyclists Say They Have Right To Choose
POSTED: 4:14 pm EST March 17, 2005
LANSING, Mich. -- The state Senate on Wednesday passed a bill to let motorcyclists ride without helmets if they are at least 21 years old and meet other requirements.
HELMET LAW
YOUR TURN: Should Motorcyclists Be Required To Wear Helmets?
To read the senate bill online, click here.
After nearly two hours of debate, the Senate -- which in the past has refused to change the state's mandatory helmet law -- voted 21-13 to send the bill to the House.
The legislation would repeal parts of the 36-year-old law, letting riders 21 and older go without helmets if they have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years or have taken a safety course.
Motorcyclists say they deserve a right to choose whether to wear helmets, arguing that helmets don't prevent accidents. They also note that every state surrounding Michigan gives riders the option to not wear helmets.
Opponents -- hospitals, insurers and law enforcement officials -- say the public should be protected from the financial risks of going without helmets.
Republican Sen. Tom George, a doctor from Portage, said the Senate was making a life-or-death decision.
He said evidence shows the number of motorcycle fatalities -- currently 80 per year in Michigan -- will increase by as many as 40 each year if the bill becomes law.
"They protect you. They protect your head," said George, who voted against the bill. "Passing this law will increase the number of deaths, injuries and the cost."
But Republican Sen. Bruce Paterson of Canton, who voted for the legislation, said the issue is about freedom.
"People have died so that we can be free -- to allow people to be free in a free land unencumbered by big government's intrusion," he said.

Re: No Helmet Law
ok heres my
:
I rode through ohio a few years ago w/ out a helmet going about 50mph.... and i'll never do it again... scared the **** outta me....
And has anyone ever thought of this: the reason we no longer have a choice of wearing a seatbelt is not for our own safety, but the the legal aspect of it... if someone hits you and your killed, then that other person has to live w/ the fact that they killed you for the rest of their life (even if the accident was out of thier control) because seatbelts save lives: they enforce this so that if you do get into an accident, it is less likely to become fatal, and leagally a bit easier to deal with.
Same thing goes w/ motor cycle helmets, I don't know about you, but i would feel better if i was in my car and got into an accident w/ a motorcyclist (no matter whos fault it was) and they were wearing a helmet- we all know what can happen if you don't. I would find it hard to deal with even if the accident wasn't my fault.
So before we say YEA- FREEDOM OF CHOICE.... we have to think of yourself as not only a rider, but also a driver.
Just a thought
However, i do agree with the government having too much power... but thats a whole other issue.
