Problem with sprocket install??

I posted this somewhere else and got no attention to it so I figured I d post here. I purchased -1 +4 sprocket for my 900rr and a new chain, but when I went to install for some reason the chain would not sit proper and it left to much slack and wouldnt get tight, so ended up going with just the +4 rear..

Was my gear selection the cause for this?? I tried to figure it out on my own and all I can come up with is the # of teeth went. Stock is 16,43 which + and odd #, 15,47 = an even could that be it? someone please enlighten me.

Before this gets out of hand as many things do on forums let me say if I took what was being said incorrectly let me apologize now I dont want to turn this into another one of those drama threads.

Also I can understand the UHHH being that alot of inexperienced individuals come on here to dont know exactly what there doing sometimes. Only reason I posted this was because I am truly stumped..

Thank you.

What exactly do you mean by "sit proper"? Sounds like maybe you bought a 530 or 525 chain, and 520 sprockets (or any odd combo that didn't match).

As for too much slack, strange as well b/c if anything... w/a 4 tooth larger sprocket in the rear the chain slack should tighten not get looser. Still though if after using 80% of the chain tensioner at the end of the swingarm if the chain tension can not be brought w/in usable parameters then you have to start cutting links.

Re: Problem with sprocket install??

Well I know that chain was 525 and the back sprocket was 525 the front might be questionable but what I ordered was 525. Its almost hard to explain verbaly but In order for it to fit properly I would have had to cut not just a whole link but Half a link....It seemed to be off just a bit. And for those that know CBR900 have that gauge on them that say new chain or need new chain and if I would have put the -1 up front with the +4 rear and tightened it would have said I need a new chain when it was a new chain.

should I have just ignored that????

I hope I'm understanding you correctly, but if the difference in slack is a half a link then you should most probably be able to adjust that at the tensioner on the back-end of the swingarm..?

heya,
just did the same install 2 days ago on my 900.......I did a stock front and a +5 520. I did not go smaller in the front because of the 520 chain and did not want to put too much tension on it.....if you did not move the rear wheel all the way to the front of the bike before installing the chain it would appear to go long. if you did that I would say your front sprocket is wrong.(who did you get it from?).you can check it on your old chain.....if you did get a 520 front it should be noticeable if you stick it in the old chain.
hope this helps.

Re: Problem with sprocket install??

put the sprockets on, move the rear wheel all the way forward, put on the chain. if you got too much slack, take a link out. simple. youre not pioneering new territory here, if its too long, then cut it. most chains come with 120 links even though most bikes dont use that many, you have to cut the chain to length yourself.

find out how many links youre stock chain takes and add 2 would be my guess. then whatever is left, use the adjuster
