Those 2 strokes don't have much engine braking to speak of so I would have to guess that he really saved it with the back brake.
Doohan was winning by such a large margin back then that it was kind of boring to watch, except seeing him light up the back tire comming out of turns.

those guys are nuts, it's funny cause everytime i tell someone i ride or someone asks the first thing that comes outta there mouth is " can you scrape your knee" nah but i can scrape my tail and there like
