Moraga man killed in 100-mph wheelie

A 21-year-old Moraga man who had been on his motorcycle popping a wheelie at 100 mph on the freeway later struck a van and died Friday morning.

Around 9:40 a.m., Joseph Lott was killed after he lost control of his 2002 Yamaha motorcycle on northbound Interstate 680 near the Contra Costa Boulevard exit and hit a van. The motorcycle tumbled another 400 feet, ejecting Lott, who was thrown into a lightpole, said Sgt. Ward Radelich of the California Highway Patrol.

Lott was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where he was pronounced dead.

Drivers had seen the motorcyclist doing wheelies at about 100 mph on Highway 24 eastbound shortly before the fatal crash, Radelich said.

The CHP has lately received other calls about motorcyclists doing stunts on freeways, he said.

The motorcyclists often have colleagues who film the stunts from cars and post them on the Internet, he said.

Last week, Danville police cited four motorcyclists who had slowed traffic on Camino Tassajara while they did wheelies.

In July, four teenagers blocked rush-hour traffic on Interstate 680 near Stone Valley Road while one car spun doughnuts.

friends of the guy actually post on bayarearidersforum.com
seems like the other story is that he came down from the wheelie fine in the left lane but was going so fast the van changed lanes on top of him and never even saw the rider.

but still, ride safe

That sucks... I dont miss having those memorials at the side of the road. And Its awful the guys out there are going through it with Joey. Seems like a really cool kid!

Anyway, the newspaper article may be wrong about facts, but it makes him look like an eternal pimp in the eyes of us stunters! ****, 100mph is slow on an 02 R1 doing a wheelie! That paper should have given the guy some serius props!

Anyway, RIP brotha....
