How to get over fear.

Hey I just finished my 03 ex6r stunt build and it has been a struggle let me tell ya. Mad respect too you all. I'm now in the awkward stage of learning all of the beginning tricks and frankly, I'm terrified. I have been getting higher and higher in my wheelies and i have been leaning in more and more in my drifts but I'm getting to the point of hitting balance point and honestly its terrifying me. Not hear to whine or complain I know its something I need to get over and I will one day whether I loop or high side before that. I'm just curious what yall did to get higher and higher with getting comfortable with it.

Re: How to get over fear.

if you are scared, you need to stop before you hurt yourself. I just stated this in another post. Some things are in your blood, some arent. If you have that much fear, you will end up seriously hurting yourself. Just stop while you are ahead. When you are good at something, it comes natural and there is no fear. Most OG's had been riding since they were very young so the wheelies on the street came natural. Many of you are new to bikes. You cant just jump into it. Many have tried, many have failed. And if you only want to do this for attention, its another reason to STOP.

Re: How to get over fear.

don't "try" to get over fear; if you are in mentally unfamiliar territory, your body will subconsciously turn a moment of unpredictibility into a crash.

my advice is; stay in your comfort zone - until it becomes your boring zone.
-
focus on getting comfortable with your rear brake, and bringing the front down easy.

I'll tell you this, second gear at 5,000rpm is a great place to get comfortable.. i had my wheelie bar break off and i went sliding in bball shorts - road rash wasn't even that bad lol. don't look at a lake and imagine an ocean.

make sure you have a steering damper so your bike doesnt go flying in another direction, make sure there are no cars behind you so you dont get squashed. never wheelie through an intersection.
(where i am, cops wont bother you if you stick to these rules.)
"if it's not reckless, its legal"

besides that dude, just appreciate the fact you got a bike, respect her - and shell respect you; undestand the fact that the bike is infinitely more stable then the rider can be..if some weird **** happens, let the bike settle itself; dont try to correct it.
- if you are in a situation where you need to correct due to limited road, you should not have gotten yourself into that situation lol, gg and gl.

and if you dont have the money to fix the damage, dont attempt the stunt. nothing worse then being stuck bikeless because you wanted to wheelie a bit better.

also, asa minimum - wear a backpack and put some carboard in it lol. dont make it more then like 1/2inch thick overall, or you'll risk seperating your spine where the backpack ends near the tail bone. try and get a decent spine protector, or supermoto armor. if you can afford it. they got some decent motorcycle armor on ebay for like fifty bucks.

it's all about that rear brake. you have to train your brain to hit that rear brake through muscle memory. everybody learns differently. for me it was sitdowns, clutch up high and immediately, (the second you clutch up) hit that brake. for others it was gradually, then learn to hit the brake to keep from looping. the important thing is to not freak out when it starts to float and jump off, but smash the rear brake. try just some normal skids to get that muscle memory going. I have to warn you though, a lot of guys didn't get good till they broke something, for me it was my leg early on. just don't ride outside of your ability. it takes time and a lot of practice. doesn't come overnight for most. and don't EVER show off, it'll get you hurt every time. take your time and only do what you feel comfortable with. practice practice and more practice. it will slowly come if it's meant to be. gear is important too, but too much gear will make you feel invisible, which you are not I assure you. this isn't a bad vid.

Re: How to get over fear.

Ok so,
1. There is a time and place for everything. So (if you are on the roads) get off the main roads and into a controlled environment like a parking lot or some other space preferably with lots of wide open unobstructed pavement.
2. If you don’t have any time on a small bike then start there. Get something cheap like a smaller dirt bike or a beater 250. Something light and underpowered. Learn the basics. Brake and throttle control. Spend time there, lots of time. Once you get good and comfortable and start to really handle the small bike well then start thinking about stepping up to a larger bike. But spend some time doing some control riding here first.
3. Find some people that can really ride. Start riding with them if possible. You’d be surprised how much you can learn just from spending lots of time hanging around and just watching other guys with skills!
4. I agree with YSRRider! If your scared you need to stop! I say this though sort of lightly because when your new to things and you don’t have anyone to watch or learn from this stuff can get sketchy that’s just a part of it. But if your taking time progressing naturally and staying comfortable to a point you should be fine. You should not push things when your new take the time! Seat time and practice everyone says it because it cant be stressed enough! You get out what you put in so put in lots of time. Even if that is just staying on two wheels and riding around pop bottles in a parking lot (I still do this!) if that is your level then its cool just stay in your lane and do not get ahead of yourself. Trying to be super Dave or show off for your friends is a sure way to get bent quick! And I totally agree this is not for everyone and if your in it for the wrong reasons you will never make it. You need to just go at your own pace. Whatever that may be and ride within your own comfort zone. Everyone started out sucking at some point and every single one of us that has been in this for any real length of time has both ate crap and chit our pants at some point! lol just being honest!
5. Your fear is telling you that you are way over your head! Listen to that.
