Best fork oil weight?

My fork seals don't seem to last that long, a few months only. The tubes are straight and have no scratches. I'm 200 lbs. and my R1 is heavy. It is time to rebuild my forks. What weight of fork oil will withstand endos better? It seems like heavier wouldn't leak as easy but it seems like it would put more strain and pressure on the seals. And should I put in the recommended amount or should I fill them less or more to not blow seals?

Re: Best fork oil weight?

thats alot of questions but what stands out for me is that you said your seals only last a few months ,first thing always use oem seals the aftermarket ones never last and if you are using oem seals then you probably need to change the bushings in your forks because if they are worn then the forktubes will have alot of play front to back and cause even good seals to leak ..

now with that being said i like to use ten wt fork oil but you could go a little thicker but i wouldn't go more the 15wt and adding extra oil will give you a smaller air chamber in your forks and that will give you the same affect as changing your spring to a stiffer spring because oil doesn't compress and air does so a smaller air chamber means less air to compress..

hope that helps

Ya if your blowing fork seals like crazy, something is wrong..

And OMR, when I do my f4i forks, should I just do it like the manual says? 10wt with the right ammount? Or should I overfill them a hair?

Re: Best fork oil weight?

thats a personal thing man if you have your compression setting on hard and your preload down tight and they are still diving to fast then you can either go to a heavier oil or add a little

Rigth on, I'll probably stick with stock then

I've been on blown seals for over a year now

I'll change the bushings this time too. I figured it is normal to wear them out this fast since my bike never comes to a stop without the back tire coming off the ground. I put on about 2000 miles a month not freeway but around town. I'm addicted. I do use the O.E.M seals.
