Re: ground out engine illegal
just had a cop run the vin on my 636 cause it had to be inspected. the vin didnt come up right it read as a 2000 r6 and stolen. obviously something wasnt right. the bmv delt with it so honestly dont know where something went wrong, but it did take me 3 months to get the title. anywho, he tried to run the motor number and nothing would go through. i live in indiana and i know all states have different laws, but here they dont trace motor #s on motorcycles or atv. swap em all ya want in the corn fields!
Re: ground out engine illegal
ya, you guys talk all hard about that **** but my #'s were all jacked up on my 929 when i was down there 3 years in a row due to switching motors and junk....the multiple times we got pulled over, guess how many of these "bad ***" florida cops did anythingabout it? hmm...probably zero considering there has never been anything against my record.
the only time it's going to be an issue is if your paperwork doesn't check out with the VIN on the bike, then they would probably impound it. they didn't even check the vin on my bike the multiple times we were pulled over for nothing.
and about getting out onto the force.....it would actually be someone in forensics that would test frames. it would have nothing to do with going to the academy and going out and being a cop. big mr. piggy driving around doesn't do that ****. if they were that educated do you think they would only be making 30k a year?

Re: ground out engine illegal
you know, here's my take on the whole deal....don't mess with stolen or jicky ****?? is it that hard?? is it really worth going to jail over?? and second...maybe ya'll have moved off of this topic..yes they can pull vins out of frames with acid...has to do with the material in the frame being more dense where they have stamped it....picture this....take a loaf of bread...push your finger into it...now cut off the top half of the bread...you can still see where your dirty *** finger went into the bread.....voila....there you have it...
Re: ground out engine illegal
Here in Texas you may be arrested, the DA may charge you, the bike may be impounded, but TECHNICALLY it's not illegal. If you have a competent/willing attorney he/she should be able to get the case dismissed. If not dismissed outright you certainly should prevail at trial, but that's a risk!!!
A motor # IS NOT a VIN number, it's for warranty purposes.
HOWEVER, for me, it's not worth the risk of dealing with it. I flip/salvage bikes and often buy bikes from online salvage auctions like salvagedirect.com and sometimes they will arrive with motor numbers removed etc. I won't sell them like that, too much risk for me. I cut my losses, break the motor down, and generally toss the short block in the scrap pile. It sucks, but it's not worth the hassle/expense of a court case.
Re: ground out engine illegal
About 3-5 years ago when I first started flipping bikes I was buying lots of parts from ebay/various forums/then craigslist etc. I was naive and didn't give much or any thought to the possibility that any motors I bought/sold could have been hot. It kind of worries me now that something was and it could come back on me
Re: ground out engine illegal
I know in Texas you can call the non-emergency # for your local police and they will run a VIN for ya, but I have no clue on how to get someone to run a motor number.

Re: ground out engine illegal
they got my boys outside of the wing shack last year at daytona. That kid had to have his registration faxed down to daytona and missed the last night of partying because of it. We came out of the wing shack and 4 cops in plain clothes had his bike surrounded and were looking for numbers. They loaded his **** up on a flat bed and hauled it off. He had to ride mandum with his friend back down the strip
