Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

KJ heli-coil is the way to go. I dont understand why someone would yell you its not as strong. I have 14 years of the tool & die trade under my belt and would not say this. Late model auto engine threaded holes that support high tourque specs use heli-coils in thier threaded holes.

The cheapest you can get what you need is going to be from your Mfg. supply houses. They usually have a next day arrival for your purchases. Give these places a try. www.MSCDirect.com www.Grainger.com and also www.mcmaster.com

I would not use a heli-coil that **** will vibrate out and come loose again. The most solid way is to use a nut and bolt.

This heli coil setup seems heavy duty, I am used to the cheap coils from like auto zone, but this should work.

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

I thought helicoils were STRONGER then stock?

Thats why many engine builds often drill out factory holes to install helicoils?

Stock threads are aluminum.. Throw a big helicoil in there, and you make the aluminum threads bigger so theres MORE aluminum to grab onto, and your bolt can now grab onto a steel helicoil..

Nut and bolting is OK.. But remembere, gotta pull the seat and gas tank to take your cage off! Not to mention, on the right side of a f4i, you can't even run a full sized nut.. Gotta run a small jam nut

And lastly, personally, I'd rather have a helicoil pull out, and be the weak point, then my motor mount break, and be the weak point!

+1 Herb

In my 12yrs experience as an aviation engineer both fixed wing and rotary, maintenance and production. Helicoils are used in a multitude of application. In addition to being used to restore damaged threads, they are used in the original design of missiles, aircraft engines, and all types of mechanical equipment and accessories to protect and strengthen tapped threads in light materials, metals, and plastics.

To my knowledge no plane/heli has crashed and burned due to h/c failure.

Google away dudes.

Now I read it again it sounds like one of my old exam answeres!

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

i got so sick of overtightening my control mounts(clutch,f\r brake) and striping them, i just helicoiled all of them.

All done....

It wasn't a bitch at all.... drill, tap, then install the coil... done. Now I'm just waitin for my frame to come back from powder coat so I can get everything back together.

I'm very glad I decided to do this.. after alot of reading on Google I'm pretty convinced that these things are the way to go.

Also... i ended up using the cheap helicoil knock offs from the local parts supplier. $21.99 for 3 coils, the tap and the install tool. They're not going anywhere... I tried to take one out but they stay put.
